Welcome to Wrexham Enters Admirable, Superb Season 3

I am sure by now you’ve heard how Deadpool and his good buddy bought a soccer team and filmed it for Welcome to Wrexham, right?   Well, if not, here is the scoop!  Ryan Reynolds, who plays that crimson-masked superhero, purchase the third oldest professional football club in the world in 2020. Wrexham A.F.C., was purchased by Deadpool and “that other guy”?  You know who I am talking about…. macaroni, nope. McDonalds, better…. Milk n’ Honey, so close.  McElhenney. Ah, that’s it!  Rob McElhenney.

Yeah, Ryan Reynolds and that guy with the tough to type name purchased a struggling soccer club in September 2020. Through shrewd investment in operations, the Hollywood duo have turned the fortunes of the club around over the last three seasons and have filmed the process for cameras along the way for the Welcome to Wrexham series on FX television.

Welcome to Wrexham Is Award-Winning Docu-series

The Emmy winning sports documentary, Welcome to Wrexham, has received critical acclaim from the media and world-wide support from fans since its debut. The initial season of the series covered the 2021-2022 Wrexham club’s heartbreaking initial campaign under the power duo’s ownership. They lost in extra time of the Playoff semi-finals leaving the team outside of the prominent football scene in the UK to end 2022.

Inspired by the success of the squad despite remaining in the National League, Reynolds and McElhenney continued to provide resources for the Welsh sporting club. The second season would have a far more celebratory finish as 40,000 people flooded the championship parade after Wrexham finally earned promotion to League Two.

Both of the entire seasons of Welcome to Wrexham should be available on streaming platform, Hulu.

League Two Visits Wales in Welcome to Wrexham

Season 3 of the critically acclaimed sports documentary series brings viewers back to the “Racecourse Ground” in Wrexham, United Kingdom. For the first time in 15-seasons, Wrexham A.F.C. enters the pitch battling 23 other UK football clubs for the chance to move up to League One. Think Quidditch from that popular wizard fantasy series but without flying on a stick, you get really tired running, and you can’t use your hands.

Out of the 24 squads, only 3 clubs each season earn promotion….and the bottom two clubs get bounced from the EFL altogether.

Ok – so I said in my headline that I would provide spoilers. Here is your warning to skip ahead if you plan to watch the series on the television. In 2023-24, Wrexham A.F.C went on a tear. There was no late season TV drama this time around.  With 26 wins landing them in 2nd place in the standings, Wrexham A.F.C. earned automatic promotion on April 13th following a 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers.

Evergreen Camera for Welcome to Wrexham

With the soccer season coming to a close a week ago, the story for Season 4 of Welcome to Wrexham will now be written in real-time. Wrexham A.F.C. enters the period of time when players can be added for next season. That time lasts from mid-June until the end of August. The ownership group will be looking to add talent given the promotion to the much tougher League One. If you want the deep dive into the difference between the two leagues, check here.

For the TL: DR version, League One is the step prior to reaching the pinnacle of soccer for UK football clubs, the Premier League. Up until the Premier League clubs typically have to be financially shrewd to even survive season-to-season, let alone vie for a chance at a prestigious English football league title.

What does this mean for Wrexham?  Well, for starters, the front office has a chance to improve the squad between June and September. Then the real grind begins as this season should be a battle every step of the way against UK clubs that likely have more talent to put on the pitch.

IF, and that is a big if, Wrexham A.F.C. wins enough games they will gain entry into arguably the best football club league in the world. Can they bet the Giant Slayer of the football world?

Once that happens, Deadpool can officially take over the world.  I, for one, am kind of with that turn of events in the current global landscape.
