Watson Season 2 Is Casting Robert Carlyle as Sherlock Holmes Back, and Yes, It’s Epic

Watson season 2 is bringing in Sherlock! When CBS’s Watson burst onto the scene, it reimagined the classic Holmes-Watson dynamic with Morris Chestnut at the helm. And now, just when you thought it couldn’t surprise us anymore, season 2 is dropping a bombshell. Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, The Full Monty) is stepping into the shoes of the one and only Sherlock Holmes. Yes, the man who made folks fear a spud in 28 Weeks Later is now tackling the “world’s greatest detective.”

Robert Carlyle as Holmes in Season 2 is Perfect

Let’s state the obvious. Casting Carlyle is a stroke of genius. Known for his ability to bring intense and complex characters to life (like Mr. Gold in Once Upon a Time), he seems custom-built for Holmes’s eccentric brilliance and emotional depth.

Showrunner Craig Sweeny teased Holmes’s return with flair. Apparently, this isn’t just a casual reunion. Holmes is showing up with plenty of drama, secrets, and emotional baggage, forcing Watson to confront not only their history but, wait for it… a hidden truth related to main character  himself. Kinda intriguing, right?

Could it be a literal skeleton in the closet? Something buried in Watson’s medical expertise? Whatever it is, the buildup is *chef’s kiss.* We don’t do subtle anymore, and neither does this show. Give us the drama already.

Watson Season 2: Smart to Smarter

Season 1 had its moments, but honestly, trudging through the whole Moriarty drug manipulation storyline was heavy. Useful? Sure. Fun? Meh. According to Chestnut, Season 2 is moving into the “unique medical case” territory, with a bigger dose of wit and humor. Basically, imagine House, MD meets clever detective duos, and that’s the vibe we’re tapping into. Oh, and apparently, Watson is about to get looser, sassier, and, dare I say it, more fun? About time, honestly.

Are We Getting Those “Elementary” Feels?

Plus here’s the cherry on top: Morris Chestnut straight-up said that he’s trying to rope in none other than Lucy Liu. Yes, Elementary fans, Joan Watson might show up to spice up the modern-day shenanigans.

Hard to say if we can count on it happening, but the mere mention has sparked enough fan theories to fill a Reddit thread. If Liu actually joins in, bringing Elementary’s legacy full circle?

What Does This Mean for the “Watson” Universe?

With Holmes officially returning, Watson essentially bridges modern storytelling and mythology. Carlyle’s portrayal could redefine its dynamic, expanding the stakes and making the Holmes-Watson buddy cop, er, detective vibes even more layered.

Expect sharp dialogue, humorously snarky digs, and moments of genuine vulnerability. Yep, somebody better give Carlyle a pipe already. And a violin.

Also, a heads up: the medical cases are getting amped. No more generic “guest of the week” plots; Sweeny promises ultra-specific cases that give Watson  career depth. If they pull this off, we’re looking at procedural gold.

Why You Should Be Paying Attention

Here’s the kicker: with Season 2, CBS is proving they aren’t afraid to up the ante on blending procedural crime-solving with genre storytelling. They’re smart enough to bring in heavyweight talent like Robert Carlyle to reel in viewers who may have skipped Season 1. Whether you’re here to watch iconic characters like Holmes get new life or you just need your weekly dose of intelligent TV, this upcoming 2nd season is about to deliver.

Oh, and just one more thing. If Carlyle and Chestnut don’t make you want to become a detective (or a doctor) by the end of the season, we don’t know what will. Your move, CBS.
