The age of the video game adaptations is here. For years, studios struggled to find which ones to make and struggled to make them good. The video game curse was a real thing, though it’s really not applicable to many of today’s projects. Fallout is the latest but not the only example of this. The Last of Us, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and more have proven that it can be done and done well.
Plenty are already on their way. Minecraft, The Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear: Solid, and others have been greenlit or are already in production. That is very likely only the beginning. For a long time, comic book adaptations reigned supreme, but that day is passing. Video game adaptations are hot right now, and here are a few games that need to be made.
4) Red Dead Redemption Could Be One Of The Best Video Game Adaptations

Is there a game more suited to a genre than Red Dead Redemption or its sequel to the Western genre? These two games would make phenomenal movies, but they might be better served as a television show. With the missions characters go on in these games, the episodic format might work better. That would also allow them to explore both the games in one overarching show.
The story explored in these two games would make one of the most interesting video game adaptations. The characters, namely Arthur Morgan, would rival the best in this medium. A third game in the franchise is still on the table, which could make this a long-running television show that eventually catches up to and perhaps goes along with the games.
3) Pokémon Cinematic Universe
There is already a Pokémon movie in the form of Detective Pikachu. There is also an anime that follows the games as well, but there’s a rich world here that could make for an epic longstanding television series. There is also the possibility for a cinematic universe. The world of Pokémon is massive, and the television/movies that have explored it haven’t tapped into it.
There are now nine regions, which is the chance for either nine movies or nine seasons of television. The potential money to be made there is impressive. There’s not much of a storyline to follow, but each game has characters doing things in their region, which could be the model of a show. Even if they do decide to pick up with Detective Pikachu and go from there, they could and should devote time and effort into building a cinematic universe.
2) Black Ops Zombies Has More Than Enough Lore
Fallout‘s success proves one thing: good video game adaptations come with a lot of lore. Fallout is one of the most lore-rich game franchises out there. The Legend of Zelda is, too, and it should make for a good adaptation. So why not choose something that has almost unrivaled lore in Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies? It spans four games and spins a story that is only loosely tied together, which would allow filmmaking creativity to connect it.
The origin of the zombie outbreak and the backstory of the characters gamers play as are enough to make a really good project. Again, this is probably best suited for a television show because it is dense and filled with Easter eggs. That sort of depth is harder to convey with a movie, but either way, zombie movies usually do well and this would probably be the most exciting one yet.
1) Ghost of Tsushima Is Basically A Movie Anyway
Ghost of Tsushima has been accused of being a movie with gameplay breaking it up. That’s sort of true, as cut scenes are as much a part of the story as anything you as the player do. It doesn’t always make for the greatest gameplay experience, but it would make an exceptional visual medium. The story is excellent, just begging for one of the best video game adaptations of today.
Ghost of Tsushima has one of the best stories in modern gaming. It’s a story that so many would be surprised to find out originated in a video game. The medium is not exactly known for its storytelling, but an adaptation of this classic would go a long way toward proving that to be untrue. Character development, plot, pacing, and so much more are expertly done in this video game. It’s high time the big (or small) screen learned that.
