The Wizard of Oz: Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton Developing Epic Modern Musical Version Set in NYC
The Wizard of Oz has been told and retold many times over the years. There’s the classic Judy Garland film, of course, but we also have the rock musical The Wiz, the dark sequel Return to Oz, the unofficial prequel Oz the Great and Powerful, and of course, the Wicked Witch of the West’s story in Wicked. Even the Muppets have been to Oz. With so many retellings, you might think we don’t need another one, but a new modern-day retelling is coming to Prime Video.
Dorothy: The Modern Wizard of Oz

After audiences see the conclusion of the Wicked story in Wicked: For Good, they can look forward to another journey to Oz – except it won’t be the Oz they know. Producer Gina Matthews is developing a new, modern-day Wizard of Oz, titled Dorothy, for Prime Video. Matthews discussed the show with Deadline, stating the following:
“I’ve been in love with The Wizard of Oz books since I was a child. The story reminds us of the qualities we need to get through hard times, and Dorothy is a symbol of strength who shows us that with a little kindness — and a lot of grit — we can not only achieve great things but also lift up those around us. I’m excited to bring that message to the world, now more than ever.”
Grammy winner Gwen Stefani and Grammy-nominated Blake Shelton are signed on as executive producers. Stefani told Deadline, “It’s a creative and modern take on a classic, and being part of something that blends music, emotion, and the character of Dorothy is inspiring to me.”
That’s All Well and Good, but Do We Need Another Trip to Oz?
The world was caught up in Wicked hype last Christmas, and Wicked: For Good will probably have the same effect this Christmas. However, one has to wonder if we need another Oz adaptation so soon. L. Frank Baum’s story undoubtedly has staying power, but even beloved stories can be retold too many times. It remains to be seen whether or not the world will be tired of Oz when Dorothy comes out, but perhaps the right take can make any classic story feel fresh again.
When Will Dorothy Primere?
The series currently doesn’t have a release date or a cast list. It might offer something new to the story, or it might be a simple rehash set in modern day. However, we should keep an open mind. Perhaps Dorothy‘s songs will join “Over the Rainbow,” “Ease On Down the Road,” and “Defying Gravity” in the pantheon of iconic Wizard of Oz tunes.
