‘The Office’ Gets An Australian Remake With A Female Boss

Amazon Prime Video new releases

Calling all The Office fans, there’s another remake in the works. The popular sitcom was originally a U.K. series created by and starring Ricky Gervais. However, most know the highly popularized American version of the show, which ran for nine seasons on NBC. After the success of the series’ multiple adaptations, another one is now also in the works: The Office is venturing “Down Under” and is in the process of being adapted for Australian television. The twist? The series will have its first-ever female lead.

Australia Adapts The Office for Television

The Office is getting another adaptation. It was recently announced that the series will be adapted into an Australian series starring Felicity Ward as the show’s lead. This will be the first time there has been a female-led version of the series. Previous versions starred actors like Ricky Gervais (U.K. version) and Steve Carell (U.S. version). It will be interesting to see how Ward’s casting will breathe new life into the series.

According to Variety, the series will follow office manager Hannah Howard, who is the head of the packaging company Flinley Craddick. When Howard gets word that corporate is shutting down her branch and forcing everyone to work remotely, she goes into survival mode, determined to keep her coworkers together. Per the synopsis, “The staff of Flinley Craddick indulge Hannah and must endure her outlandish plots as they work toward the impossible targets that have been set for them.”

The series will be released on Prime Video. The global release date, excluding the United States, is set for October 18. It is unknown if the series will be available in the U.S. The first season will feature eight episodes. Other cast members will include Edith Poor, Steen Raskopoulos, Shari Sebbens, Josh Thomson, Jonny Brugh, Susan Ling Young, Raj Labade, Lucy Schmidt, Zoe Terakes, Pallavi Sharda, and Claude Jabbour.

The First Look at the Series

Deadline recently published the first images of the new series, an image that features the series’ first female lead, Felicity Ward. According to the publication, this is the 13th iteration of The Office. The original BBC version ran for two years, from 2001 to 2003, and the U.S. version ran on NBC for nine seasons, from 2005 to 2013. Other remakes ran in countries such as Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, Israel, South Africa, etc.

The new series was developed by Julie De Fina and Jackie van Beek, both of whom will also serve as executive producers of the show. Additional executive producers include Kylie Washington and Jodie Molloy. De Fina is known for her work on Where the Wild Things Are (2009) and Aftertaste (2021), while van Beek is known for her work on What We Do in the Shadows (2014), The Breaker Upperers (2016), and Wellington Paranormal (2016).

Both the original U.K. version of The Office and the American adaptation were praised for their fantastic performances and received many accolades over the years. The Office (U.K.) won the Best New TV Comedy award two consecutive years in 2001 and 2002, along with a Best TV Comedy Actor award for Ricky Gervais in 2002. In 2004, The Office (U.K.) won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series: Musical or Comedy, the first time a British comedy series had ever won in that category. That same year, Gervais also won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series: Comedy or Musical.

Throughout its nine-season run, The Office (U.S.) was also the recipient of many accolades. Overall, it was nominated for 42 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning a total of five, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. Additionally, the series was named one of the best TV series of the year by the American Film Institute in both 2006 and 2008. For his role as frustrating but lovable Michael Scott, Steve Carell won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Comedy or Musical in 2006.

Conclusion

Let’s all stay tuned to see how this new version of the show holds up to its successful counterparts. Hopefully, a female lead is just what the series needs to explore fresh and exciting storylines. The Office (Australia) will be available on Prime Video on October 18th.
