On July 31, 2024 Netflix confirmed that Squid Game would be returning and Season two would continue right where the intense storyline ended in season one. Along with the announcement of a second series, Netflix also officially released details about a third and final series of Squid Game which is set to air in 2025. With new cast members, an epic plot and sky-high expectations from the fans, It’s safe to say Squid Game Season 2 will be another Netflix banger!
A Recap of Season 1’s Impact
Netflix’s Squid Game rapidly became one of the streaming service’s biggest shows ever, and not to mention scored a ridiculous global audience as well as a staggering 14 Emmy nominations. The protagonist Seong Gi-hun in Squid Game Season 1, played by Lee Jung-jae, made history by becoming the first Asian actor to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for a non-English role.
The show’s fictional drama and searing social critique clearly struck a nerve with audiences, as it showed issues of economic inequality and the extremes to which people would go in order to escape poverty. Its ongoing popularity was such that it even spawned a reality TV spinoff, though not without its detractors, as contestants reportedly dubbed it as “cruel” and “rigged.”
What to Expect in Season 2
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the writer, director and executive producer of Squid Game, shared his enthusiasm about the next instalment. In a letter to fans, he wrote: “I’m thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of the story. We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride. I hope you’re excited for what’s to come. Thank you, always, and see you soon, everyone.”
The full synopsis for Season 2 provides a glimpse into the upcoming storyline:
“Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using his fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: looking for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”
