Soul Eater Is A 2008 Stylish Horror Comedy About Reapers

Soul Eater

The 2000s spawned tons of anime that fans know today as the classics, the ones that stood the test of time even almost two decades later like Soul Eater. This anime is still begging for a potential reboot adaptation as Atsushi Ohkubo’s best work. It came out in 2008, four years after its manga, but ended in 2019 after a 51-episode season.

Many grew to know the manga from the anime but despite this, the manga outlasted the anime and concluded 2013. The anime grew in popularity and captured the dark, gothic aesthetic. With its shounen fantasy aspects mixed with wacky action, it was a hit for many with its serious undertones disguised with its playful comedic moments.

Since its manga is coming up on its 20th anniversary, Ohkubo commemorated the event with a key visual artwork for Soul Eater. This series is seemingly slept on in a sea of masterpieces.

The 51-episode anime Soul Eater is a timeless classic, blending comedy, and action in a unique way with its darker style and tone, while not taking itself too seriously, most of the time. We meet Lord Death, as his son, Death the Kid, is one of the main cast. He is among two other “reapers,” as they gather souls in a dark fantasy world with “living weapons”.

They include meister Maka Albarn and her death scythe “Soul Eater” Evans. The stubborn ninja Black Star utilizes his nunchucks, the kind-hearted Tsubaki Nakatsukasa, as his weapon. The uptight “Kid” holsters the carefree twin sisters Patricia and Elizabeth Thompson, his dual-wield demon guns. This main student group learns in Death City at Death Weapon Meister Academy.

Throughout their mission to collect souls, they protect Death City and fight to survive. On the surface, is a typical shounen anime with plenty of battles but underneath, is about the main cast, including the antagonists, finding themselves among the conflicts that ensue. This anime came out in the same decade as long-running series including One Piece and Naruto.

Soul Eater Manga Entering 20th Anniversary

For its 20th anniversary, Soul Eater‘s creator Ohkubo will display key new visuals at an art exhibition at Tokyo’s Space Galleria in Japan. This will be from August into September of this year with three live drawing sessions at Osaka’s Space Gratus from October into November. The autograph session will be determined based on a lottery system and is currently open for its pre-sale tickets lottery.

The event includes exclusive displays and merchandise for this special occasion. Its teaser video also had a visual featuring the original cast from the anime. It included both Soul and Maka, who are played by Koki Uchiyama and Chiaki Omigawa. Although it is a few episodes longer, this anime is sort of like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, done by the same studio and came out a year after in 2009.

If you are getting into anime, Soul Eater has most of what a new fan would look for and has enough episodes to enjoy binging. Its only season is essentially a two-part series and can be watched before getting into other anime. Its studio, studio Bones, is known for popular anime like Boku no Hero Academia, Mob Psycho, Bungou Stray Dogs, and Ouran Koukou Host Club.

Where to Watch It

Soul Eater has a bit of everything for the anime genre. It encapsulated the 2000s should be up there with the other classic anime this decade had to offer. Ohkubo’s all-time work from 2008 can be streamed on platforms like Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Apple TV.
