SNL Writers Lovingly Roast Lorne Michaels In Emmy Acceptance Speech

Lorne Michaels

On a night set aside to honor high achievement in television, some of Lorne Michaels’ most notable apprentices paid tribute to his legacy. From Chris Farley to Conan O’Brien, Tina Fey, and beyond, Michaels has nurtured generations of comedy talent as creator and executive producer of NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Some of that very same talent was ready to roast him gently at Sunday’s Emmy Awards.

Saturday Night Live alums Maya Rudolph, Seth Meyers, and Kristen Wiig joined current cast member Bowen Yang on stage at the 76th Emmy Awards. They gathered ostensibly to present the nominees for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special. They used the opportunity to comedically counsel their boss, Lorne Michaels, on his many Emmy defeats.

Rudolph, Wiig, and Yang took turns to motivate Michaels – technically a multiple-time awards loser. “Each and every one of those 85 times you lost, you were robbed,” Rudolph asserted, as an amused Michaels looked on from the audience. “Lauren,” Yang confidently and incorrectly addressed Michaels. “Look, it gets better. OK, just because SNL didn’t work doesn’t mean your next idea won’t. Keep dreaming!”

Proceedings went along a similar vein as an increasingly frustrated Seth Meyers attempted to corral his castmates by putting Lorne Michaels’ award snubs into perspective. “Lorne has won 28 Emmys, not to mention that SNL won over 200,” Meyers told his incredulous co-presenters.

Lorne Michaels’ Trophy Case

As Saturday Night Live prepares for its fiftieth season, Lorne Michaels can ruminate over a trophy case stuffed with golden statues. The famed producer has been an NBC staple since starting SNL in 1975.  And, while his SNL stars opted to avoid a nitty-gritty breakdown of Lorne’s achievements during the award ceremony, the grand facts of his critical success are awe-inspiring.

Yet, Seth Meyers did not cite the most accurate stats on stage. The Television Academy has recognized Michaels with a whopping 106 Emmy nominations. He has taken home the prize on 21 occasions. And these are only the awards for Michaels as the producer of his many critically acclaimed shows. Saturday Night Live, across its various departments, cast, writers, and crew, has earned 331 nominations, with 90 wins.

Final Thoughts

With a constantly updating cast, a new celebrity host each week, and the added jeopardy of a live broadcast, Saturday Night Live has withstood fifty years of media turbulence. Even the sketch comedy format helps its endurance – the show can be easily clipped and posted on YouTube and TikTok to reach a more varied audience. If nothing else, through his stewardship of the show, Lorne Michaels has carved out a spectacular legacy as the man responsible for discovering fifty years’ worth of brilliant comedy minds.
