The announcement that Nicolas Cage is playing the beloved John Madden in a new biopic likely has the football mogul rolling in his grave. Somehow, the writing of a biopic on such a classy legend feels too soon, in general. However, a combination of Nicolas Gage as the main actor and David O. Russell as the director makes the biopic seem like an even worse idea. The movie is said to tell the story behind one of the most influential NFL-affiliated individuals of all time. No small feat.
Nicolas Cage Selected For Role
The decision has been made that Nicolas Cage was selected for the role of John Madden in the new biopic ‘Madden.’ Why? No one is sure. Apparently, he was in the running with some other well-known faces like Will Ferrell and Hugh Jackman. Rumor has it that Tom Hanks would like to portray Al Davis in the film. That makes about as much sense as choosing Cage as the main actor. Although at least Hanks has a little experience working in sports films, which Cage seemingly has not.
Cage doesn’t seem to resemble Madden other than skin tone. It will be interesting to see them transform the actor through the different ages Madden will be at throughout the biopic. Cage is an incredible actor; it’s impossible to diminish that, but Madden had such charisma and energy that Cage doesn’t normally exude in his more action-film-oriented parts. Can he rise to the occasion? Maybe.
David O. Russell, The Director
David O. Russell did well with his movie ‘The Fighter‘ that captured the angst and growth of boxer ‘Irish’ Micky Ward in 2010. He utilized actors like Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg, who aren’t exactly known for their boxing progress. Perhaps he does have the chops to transform another set of fantastic authors into NFL moguls. However, Russell has some scandals in his past that make him an uncomfortable choice to direct any movie. Will ‘Madden’ be good? Maybe. Will it be interesting? Absolutely, without a doubt.
The John Madden Biopic

Russell is thrilled about directing Madden’s biopic. He is focusing less on the coaching aspect of the former NFL great and more on his transition into regular life off of the gridiron. Many athletes express the transition from NFL to regular life as one of the hardest of their lives; it makes sense it would be similar for coaches. If you’re looking for a hugely football-focused movie, this biopic might not be it. Portraying a struggling person attempting to reinvent themselves does seem a bit more up Nicholas Cage’s alley.
In Conclusion
John Madden’s biopic is hitting the big screen in the near future. The movie is being backed by Amazon MGM and will be directed by David O. Russell. Nicholas Cage will be the main man on set, playing Madden. If we cross our fingers and our toes, we may just see Tom Hanks in the movie as well. The selection of the director and the main actor are questionable selections, but hopefully they still do John Madden’s legacy justice. Will you watch the new film? Sound off below!
