4 Underappreciated TV Shows To Watch Right Now

What makes a show successful these days? With so many streaming options to choose from, it’s no wonder smaller shows tend to get lost in the fray. While a lucky few shows seem to break through to be cultural phenomenons, in today’s streaming model, it is more likely than not that most shows tend to fly under the radar. Especially with so many platforms and viewing options out there, how is a smaller show with no name for itself supposed to become successful?

Most of the time, smaller shows are even better than the ones deemed “global sensations,” so why don’t these shows get the attention they rightfully deserve? In this article, I’ll highlight some smaller shows that aren’t getting as much attention as current blockbusters like Bridgerton, House of the Dragon, or The Bear. Shows like My Lady Jane, Interview with the Vampire, and Maxton Hall are among several shows that are underappreciated in today’s streaming market. So, what are some of these shows about?

Interview with the Vampire

Interview with the Vampire, based on the book series by Anne Rice, centers on a vampire named Louis de Pointe du Lac who agrees to tell his life story, which spans centuries, to a well-respected journalist. The vampire’s narrative focuses primarily on his family, a coven known as Théâtre des Vampires. Despite there not being a lot of press promoting this show, the dedicated fanbase has helped Interview with the Vampire get renewed for an upcoming third season.

Want to know what the fans have to say about Interview with the Vampire? @mindironalia on X (formerly Twitter) says, Interview with the Vampire is the best show to come out of the last decade. There is NOTHING comparable to it at the moment, it’s a masterpiece through and through. Every show should be taking their cues from them. Magnificent story, magnificent performances, totally insane.”

So, why has the show flown so far under the radar, especially after already releasing two successful seasons? Could it be a casualty of the show’s marketing budget? Is it because the show is on a lesser-known streaming platform (Interview with the Vampire currently airs on AMC+)? I guess we’ll never really know. Regardless of why, if the fan approval is any indication, this is definitely a show worthy of more attention. To see what more X users had to say about the beloved show, click here!

My Lady Jane

My Lady Jane is a historical fantasy series starring Emily Bader as Lady Jane Grey, who suddenly finds herself ascending to the throne after being crowned queen overnight. With her new title comes lots of uproar, and many subjects vow to have the queen’s head, while others attempt to run her out of society altogether. Is this the first you’ve heard of this show? I would guess that since its unfortunate release so close on the heels of another Regency-esque period drama, Bridgerton, My Lady Jane might have gotten lost in all the hubbub. But don’t fret, because I’m here to tell you all about it!

In terms of media attention, My Lady Jane seems to have gotten some of the most publicity of all the shows on this list. The show has received mainly positive reviews, with Forbes calling it “surprisingly great.” Vulture penned a piece titled “My Lady Jane Has What Every Other Tudor Drama Is Missing.” So, want to see what all the fuss is about? Stream My Lady Jane today!

Gen V

The spin-off series of the popular show The Boys, Gen V centers on the first-ever college for superheroes. At Godolkin University, the young heroes are taught how to be the next generation of supes, the heroes of tomorrow. Piggybacking off the massive success of its predecessor, Gen V is probably the most well-known show on this list. However, its cast of talented up-and-coming actors and captivating storylines make it one to watch. Does Gen V have the potential to eclipse the success of The Boys? Only time will tell.

Maxton Hall

Maxton Hall is a series on Prime Video based on books of the same name. The show follows protagonist Ruby Bell, who becomes involved in a scandal at her school. A scholarship student, Ruby does her best not to ruffle any feathers or jeopardize her spot at Maxton Hall. To accomplish this, Ruby finds herself at the mercy of the arrogant James Beaufort, a popular student from an extremely wealthy family. Will Ruby be able to survive the year with her secret? Or will her discretion end up being more trouble than it’s worth? Look into Maxton Hall now!

Conclusion – Do Smaller Shows Just Have Smaller Budgets?

Can it be chalked up to marketing? Is it a budgeting issue? Or, is the media less likely to want to report on a lesser-known show? What is it that constitutes being headline-worthy, and what doesn’t? Perhaps it’s simply that these shows have smaller marketing or distribution budgets and can’t pay for the kind of publicity bigger shows can. Regardless, I think these somewhat obscure titles are worth a chance. So, if you get the opportunity, check out some of these shows today!
