Yellowstone fans are some of the most dedicated ones around television, but they’d like to see John Dutton on their TV screens soon.
Is that going to happen? Yes, but getting more new episodes done is up in the air. Kevin Costner, who plays the family patriarch on the Paramount Network series, has his hands full. He’s been busy working on a film titled Horizon: An American Saga. There are plans for a second film based on the same subject matter.
Costner has been hearing about John Dutton and Yellowstone for some time now. He understands that fans of the show have been getting impatient. Show creator Taylor Sheridan shared some pointed words about Costner back in May 2023. Sheridan told The Hollywood Reporter that he was “disappointed” to see Costner leave the show.
“His movie seems to be a great priority to him and he wants to shift focus,” Sheridan said. “I sure hope [the movie is] worth it — and that it’s a good one.”
There’s been some pushback from Costner around his role. He answered a question about it in chatting with Deadline.
Well, I haven’t felt good about it the last year, what with the way they’ve talked about it. It wasn’t truthful. So now I’m talking about a little bit about what the real truth of it was. I made a contract for seasons five, six and seven. In February, after a two- or three-month negotiation, they made another contract. They wanted to redo that one, and instead of seasons six and seven, it was 5A and 5B, and maybe we’ll do six. They weren’t able to make those. Horizon was set in the middle, but Yellowstone was first position. I fit [Horizon] into the gaps. They just kept moving their gaps.

The Dutton family helps keep the drama alive. Other stars on the show include Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Luke Grimes, Kelsey Asbille, Jefferson White, and Wes Bentley. Also on the show are Jennifer Landon, Ian Boehm, Moses Brings Plenty, Gil Birmingham, and Finn Little.
Costner called out an untruth about not being there enough for the rest of the cast. “That’s not true,” he said in the Deadline interview. “There were blocks of time that we didn’t get 10 episodes done. Basically, we were starting in April and May, and we’d usually go through August. We’d do 10. We didn’t even get 10 done during that time. I only worked 43 days. So that’s bullsh*t. That’s a lie. That’s not correct. They sent me away for seven days to go to London, to go to England during Covid, to do [promotion]. They made the contract and they picked the days.”
When will Yellowstone come back on the air and finish up with original episodes? It does have a set time for later this year.
Right Now, Costner Working To Finish His Movie
Costner is quite dedicated to finishing up his movie. The Dutton family became involved in one of television’s most dramatic storylines. Yellowstone holds no punches back in its dialogue. Love, death, drama, and intrigue all have their rightful places in one episode after another. One ongoing storyline involves Beth Dutton (Reilly), John’s daughter, and Jamie Dutton (Bentley), John’s adopted son. Their scenes show Beth trying to get the upper hand on him all the time. Jamie, though, does his best to one-up his sister.
Right now, all finished episodes are getting the rerun treatment. They’re popping up on the Paramount Network, plus get airtime on a PlutoTV channel.
Kevin Costner will continue to work on his movie. Yellowstone will start airing its final episodes coming up in November 2024. It will give the show’s fans some much-needed closure. And it’ll allow this drama’s great characters to finish strong.
