The newest episode of Helluva Boss was recently released, and it’s incredible. If you’ve forgotten, the show is an animated black dramedy created by Vivienne Medrano. This YouTube-exclusive series is also a spin-off of Hazbin Hotel, another show of Medrano’s. Helluva Boss entertains thousands with its captivating characters, heart-pounding fights, and tension-breaking humor. The latest installment, Mastermind, brings all of these aspects and presents a turning point.
Quick Recap of Helluva Boss
Helluva Boss follows the insane adventures of I.M.P., an enterprise of imp assassins. Blitzo, the show’s overall protagonist, is the CEO and founder of the company. The husband and wife duo of Moxxie and Millie are the sharpshooter and muscle, respectively. Working the front desk is Loona, Blitzo’s aloof adopted hellhound daughter. Their job is to journey to Earth and kill targets given by vengeful sinners. Alongside the main cast is a massive ensemble of supporting characters, friends, and foes.
The most notable side being is Stolas, a prince of the Ars Goetia royal family. He and Blitzo have a complicated relationship that the show prominently highlights. It’s a sensual yet toxic arrangement involving Stolas giving Blitzo his grimoire to access Earth. The prince eventually canceled the deal upon developing feelings for the business imp. Blitzo didn’t reciprocate, driving a massive wedge between them and the fandom. However, the new Mastermind episode might have changed things between the duo.
Blitzo Goes to Court
To avoid spoilers, watch the full episode, then come back. The episode starts with Blitzo interviewing four new interns but is interrupted by wraith-like beings. These fearsome spirits have come to arrest the I.M.P. crew for operating their business. The gang is captured and dragged into a courtroom led by The Seven Deadly Sins. They and the Ars Goetia accuse Blitzo of stealing Stolas’ grimoire for his business.
The imp defends himself, but Andrealphus, Stolas’ brother-in-law, claims Blitzo was forcing himself on Stolas. Andrealphus resumes to plead his case by claiming Blitzo plotted to have Stolas assassinated. The court immediately votes to have I.M.P. executed, but Blitzo gets the others spared. As he accepts his fate, Stolas arrives, deus ex machina style, and saves the imp. He proceeds to admit he gave Blitzo access to Earth using his book. As punishment, Stolas is stripped of his power and exiled from the Ars Goetia.
A Turning Point for Stolitz
The Helluva Boss fandom has adored Stolitz, the pairing of Blitzo and Stolas. Despite the ship’s initial toxicity, the characters care about each other. People wanted these characters to get together, but recent episodes dashed their dreams. Full Moon and Apology Tour displayed Stolas and Blitzo going their separate ways. Of course, fans kept hoping, and their patience has finally paid off.
In Mastermind, Stolas sings his confession before it turns into a romantic duet with Blitzo. The pair finally lay out their most honest feelings for each other. Their touching ballad is like something you’d hear in a Disney movie. After Stolas loses his status, Blitzo takes him in and cares for him lovingly. The imp even plants a tender kiss on the former prince’s cheek as he sleeps. These moments show that Stolitz is back and better or close to returning stronger.
Presenting the Red Dragon of Wrath
Helluva Boss showcases a prominent group of powerful rulers: The Seven Deadly Sins. Each Sin presides over a distinct Ring of Hell, ruling the citizens like gods. Before Mastermind, the show featured three of the seven members. The first to appear was Asmodeus, the Lord of Lust and an Ars Goetia king. Beelzebub, the Queen of Gluttony, followed his debut in Helluva Boss. Lastly was Mammon, the Governor of Greed and arguably the most evil of the Sins.
A prominent highlight of Mastermind is it showcases the missing members, like Satan. Voiced by Broadway star Patrick Page, the ruler of Wrath enforces Hell’s laws. He sounds like a gruff sheriff but acts like a harsh courthouse judge. Satan is depicted as a red demonic dragon, adhering to particular Biblical descriptions. Additionally, he possesses a strongman theme to stick to the Sins’ circus act pattern. It’s honestly amazing to see such an imposing figure in Helluva Boss.
Queens of Envy and Sloth
Alongside Satan, Helluva Boss featured two other new Sins, one being Leviathan. Besides controlling the Envy Ring, her role in Hell is currently unknown. This Sin is a two-headed fish demon, with each head possessing separate personalities. One is humanoid and white, while the other is a black moray eel. Leviathan is typically portrayed as a sea serpent in media, so this variation is unique. Her heads could also allude to drama masks like on her phone app.
Belphegor is the final brand-new Sin shown in Helluva Boss. She reigns over the paradise-esque Sloth Ring and runs Hell’s pharmaceutical empire. This Sin is a sheep with multiple eyes and a burning head candle. Given her eyes and angelic appearance, her design could stem from the Lamb of Revelation. Belphegor is resigned to the background, constantly falling asleep and waking up. Hopefully, the show will have her and Leviathan back so fans can further explore them.
Final Thoughts
Mastermind is a fantastic Helluva Boss episode that has not disappointed its fans. It reveals the last Seven Deadly Sins and the return of the Stolitz ship. This story possesses much climax energy, though it’s only the penultimate installment. To see how Vivienne Medrano and the crew top this tale will be intriguing. The Season Two conclusion airs next month with the episode Sinsmas.
