Blue Eye Samurai: Beauty in The Gory Masterpiece of Netflix

Netflix's Blue Eye Samurai LA Tastemaker

Netflix is continuing its quest to dominate the anime industry. With the launch of Blue Eye Samurai, Netflix’s anime library continues to grow. How can violence be poetic, and what makes Blue Eye Samurai a gory masterpiece?

Blood, Beauty, and Origins

In the 1600s, during the Edo period, Japan isolated itself from the outside world. Driven by a fear of losing their identity and economy, the country developed an aversion to white people, who were viewed as devilish and soulless. This is how Mizu, the protagonist of the Netflix series Blue Eye Samurai, was born. A sword divides life from death, and with both hands on it, Mizu orchestrates a sequence of death.

In a rhythmic and accelerated manner, with just a thought, she carves through a silent, snowy landscape and leaves a trail of blood. In the Netflix animated drama Blue Eye Samurai (2023), action and gore take the form of revenge, following Mizu (Maya Erskine), a samurai who travels across Japan in search of the white men who killed her mother and made her born as a “demon.” Created by Michael Green (screenwriter of Logan) and his wife Amber Noizumi, the visual language of the art is inspired by traditional Japanese art.

Backgrounds and Subplot

The series features scenes of nature and old Japanese houses, with walls adorned with delicate traces and the soothing sounds of fire, footsteps, birds, and trees, whose movement is constantly interrupted by the obscure shadow of death and menace. It explores settings like brothels, only illuminated by candles, where moments of freedom can quickly transform into fear and death.

One of the subplots of the series shines above Akemi (Brenda Song), whose golden flowers in her hair catch the sun, symbolizing her gentleness and majesty. As she searches for her lover, Akemi’s beauty and sensitivity contrast sharply with Mizu’s path of revenge. Through her journey, she gains experience in a world previously hidden from her. Unlike Mizu, whose power is a tool and a way of life, Akemi’s power represents liberation and realization. A woman who recites poetry while embracing her sensuality pursues confidence and confronts a harsh world with principles of love and justice, transforming her life into something different.

Poems, Blood and Revenge

Blue Eye Samurai blends poetic violence with longing and purity, revolving around flesh and passion. It uses the vulnerability of the body as death corpses by Mizu’s sword and mixes brutality and sensuality as expressions of power, ritual, and passion. The series suggests that even great swordsmen need love and tenderness. Their vulnerability is exposed in the solitude of their rooms, and the secrets they keep are the most important secrets of the series, which are behind a façade: Mizu is a female samurai dressed as a man.

Two characters admire Mizu’s inherited strength: her future apprentice, Ringo (Masi Oka), and Taigen (Darren Barnet), who is more of a rival. They seek power through journeys of hope and honor. Taigen searches for a path where revenge means glory, but Mizu’s incomprehensible pursuit of revenge remains a mystery. It is hidden beneath her long cape, yellow glasses, and traditional Japanese kasa hat, darkening her figure and characterized blue eyes.

So, What Is Blue Eye Samurai?

Inspired by Kurosawa’s works, Blue Eye Samurai, forms death in battle as a moving painting, quite literally: the blood exploding and the enemies falling for the brush between the hands of Mizu. The paused and quick movements, the need to pay close attention to the next move that comes one from another vividly, make clear that even if a protagonist seems unbreakable, she might fall, making the tension of the show even more appealing.

What To Expect Of Blue Eye Samurai?

For us, the background of Mizu’s life shapes her reactions, secrets, and more things unfolding in the episodes of this incredible, poetic, and subtly violent masterpiece. Netflix promised 4 more seasons, and Blue Eye Samurai awaits more storylines of the characters as they keep following the path of Mizu, developing the story of an era of secrets and war.
