Travis Turner: Virginia Football Coach Still Missing After Child Pornography Allegations
WISE COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police are searching for former high school football coach, Travis Turner, who vanished Nov. 20 after investigators sought to question him in connection with child pornography charges. The case has garnered national attention, with U.S. Marshals joining local authorities in the hunt for the fugitive.
The Fugitive
Turner, 46, is a longtime football coach in Wise County. He was a physical education teacher and football coach at Union High School. He was well-known locally for his involvement in youth athletics and mentoring players. That reputation collapsed when investigators obtained warrants alleging he possessed child pornography.
Police began investigating Turner earlier this year after receiving information that led them to suspect he had illegal material. When warrants were issued, authorities attempted to contact him for questioning. Turner did not respond and left his home.
Virginia State Police said Turner faces five counts of possession of child pornography and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor, with additional charges pending. Officials have warned that he may be armed and dangerous, urging the public not to approach him if spotted.
Disappearance and Aftermath
Investigators say Turner left his residence on Nov. 20, shortly after learning police wanted to question him. According to a statement from Adrian Collins, the family’s lawyer:
“The last known contact the family had with Travis occurred on or about Thursday, November 20, after he left his residence to walk in the woods with a firearm. He is believed to have entered a heavily wooded and mountainous area. At which point, no warrants had been issued for his arrest.”
A missing persons report was filed on Nov. 21. By Nov. 25, Virginia State Police listed Turner as a fugitive, with additional charges pending. His vehicle was later found abandoned, raising concerns about his intentions and safety. Family members have described his departure as abrupt and out of character. His wife has asked publicly for him to surrender, saying that facing the allegations is the only way forward. Relatives have echoed those calls, urging him to cooperate with authorities rather than remain on the run.
Search Efforts
The search has expanded beyond local law enforcement. The Wise County Sheriff’s Office is working with the U.S. Marshals Service, which has significant experience tracking fugitives across state lines. Federal authorities have issued warnings that Turner may be armed and are coordinating with regional agencies to monitor leads.
Community members have been asked to report any sightings or suspicious activity. Police have emphasized that Turner should not be confronted directly. Instead, citizens are asked to please contact their local police department with any information.
Family Response
Turner’s family has broken its silence in recent days. Relatives have described his departure as abrupt and devastating. His wife has pleaded publicly for him to surrender, saying that running from the charges only deepens the pain for those left behind. Family members have encouraged him to turn himself in rather than remain a fugitive.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities continue to track leads, but as of Dec. 5, Turner remains missing. The U.S. Marshals Service has urged vigilance, noting that fugitives often rely on networks of acquaintances or attempt to hide in rural areas. Investigators have not disclosed specific tips but say they are pursuing multiple avenues.
Law enforcement officials have reiterated that Turner’s disappearance does not change the seriousness of the allegations against him. The search is ongoing, with federal and local agencies working together to locate the fugitive coach.
Anyone with information that may aid in locating Turner is asked to contact the Virginia State Police or the U.S. Marshals Service.
