During the meeting in motel room 158, the argument over the missing financial documents escalated very quickly. Realizing the situation was spiraling out of control, Quintanilla tried to walk out of the room. As she turned her back, Saldívar pulled out a .38-caliber revolver and fired. The hollow-point bullet struck the singer in her upper right back, doing catastrophic damage to her shoulder, lung, and a major artery.
