Silver Dollar City (Branson, MO, USA): An Old-Fashioned Theme Park For the Non-Thrill-Seeker

Non-thrill-seekers who like the charm of heritage-themed theme parks will fall in love with Silver Dollar City, with its blend of artisan craftsmanship, live entertainment, and traditional Ozark cuisine. Designed to emulate an 1880s Ozark mining town, this quaint theme park features over 100 working artisans, from glassblowers and blacksmiths to candy makers and more, each demonstrating their craft with skill and storytelling.

Live shows are performed throughout the park daily, from bluegrass and gospel performances to seasonal festivals, such as the Harvest Festival and An Old Time Christmas. You can even see a show while riding the train. One thing I highly recommend for non-thrill-seekers is taking a guided tour of Marvel Cave. How many theme parks have a cave? Just be sure to watch out for the occasional bat!

Food is an integral part of the overall experience at this theme park. As an Ozark native, I visited this park every year during my childhood. I can still remember the smells of lye soap and leather, the sound of banjos, and watching the artisans make their mouth-watering saltwater taffy and peanut brittle. Even better are the funnel cakes. To this day, Silver Dollar City’s funnel cakes are the best I’ve had. Other regional favorites include apple butter, kettle corn, fried potatoes, and fried pies.

Silver Dollar City Parks & Resorts are filled with laid-back leisure activities that are just right for the non-thrill-seeker. Enjoy live entertainment over a 3-course meal as you sail across beautiful Table Rock Lake on the Showboat Branson Belle, or relax in a rustic log cabin at the Silver Dollar City Campground.

RV and tent camping are also available, and free shuttle service to and from the theme park is offered multiple times daily. To make the most out of your trip, pair Silver Dollar City with White Water, where you can cool off while floating down a winding, lazy river, past waterfalls and tiki torches.

Be sure to visit McHaffie’s Homestead cabin on the Silver Dollar City Square. It was built by my ancestor Levi Casey in 1843. Stop by and hear the Homestead Pickers play and sing old-time favorites.

For non-thrill-seekers, thrills don’t come from hair-raising rides, but from memorable experiences. These theme parks prove that excitement doesn’t need to be loud or fast!
