Tesla Generously Offers Tesla Model 3 Turn Signal Stalk But It’ll Cost You
In a move that screams “we messed up,” Tesla is now offering a solution to a problem with the Tesla Model 3 that it single-handedly created. After yanking the turn signal stalk from the refreshed “Highland” Model 3, the company is now selling a retrofit kit to put it right back where it belongs. The catch? For now, it’s only available in China, and it’ll set you back about $350. You almost have to admire the audacity.
This entire saga feels like a corporate version of firing your best employee, realizing your mistake a year later, and then offering them their old job back with a pay cut. In 2023, Tesla decided its minimalist design philosophy meant getting rid of physical stalks for turn signals and gear selection. Instead, drivers were expected to use steering wheel buttons and a finicky touchscreen slider.
The change was, to put it mildly, not popular. Drivers complained, critics scoffed, and everyone with a lick of common sense wondered why you’d complicate one of the most basic functions of driving. It seems the chorus of disgruntled owners finally got loud enough for someone at Tesla to listen.
Acknowledging the Obvious: The Tesla Model 3 Turn Signal Blunder

The backlash wasn’t just online chatter; it was a genuine design flaw that frustrated users daily. Navigating a roundabout with buttons instead of a stalk is about as intuitive as brushing your teeth with your feet. The muscle memory built over decades of driving was suddenly useless.
Earlier this year, the penny finally dropped. Tesla’s head engineer, Lars Moravy, conceded in an interview that, “maybe we deleted too much.” It was a rare moment of corporate self-awareness, admitting that in their quest to reinvent the wheel, they had accidentally made it square.
Now, Tesla is making good on that admission, but not without making it a little painful for its customers. The retrofit isn’t a free apology; it’s a paid accessory. For 2,499 yuan (roughly $348), Chinese owners of certain Tesla Model 3 cars can have a Tesla Service Center install a whole new steering wheel assembly that includes the much-missed stalk. And yes, Tesla will graciously take your old, stalk-less wheel off your hands as part of the deal.
What Does This Mean for Tesla Owners in the US?
So far, the turn signal stalk revival tour is exclusive to China. Tesla’s website specifies that the retrofit is currently only for Tesla Model 3 vehicles produced after February 7, 2025. Conveniently, this is just a few days before Moravy’s public mea culpa. Tesla promises that support for earlier models is coming, but they haven’t bothered to provide a timeline.
Will this olive branch (that you have to pay for) make its way to the US and other markets? It seems likely. Tesla often uses China as a testing ground for new releases and updates before a global rollout. However, there’s no guarantee on when that might happen or which models will be eligible. Given the differences in manufacturing between Tesla’s global factories, US owners might be in for a bit of a wait.
For now, American drivers will have to keep fumbling with the steering wheel buttons on their Tesla Model 3 cars, dreaming of a day when they, too, can pay a premium for a feature that should have been standard all along. It’s a classic Tesla move: create a problem, wait for the outrage, then sell the solution. You can’t make this stuff up.
