There’s something about a road trip that feels exciting—until you realize the road you’re on might be haunted. A haunted road trip, suddenly, the open highway doesn’t feel so open, and every shadow looks like it’s hiding something (or someone). Where to start?  The USA is so vast, so populated, yet so remote.  There are roads that have been explored for decades, and some that Google Maps hasn’t been able to find.  Question: If it isn’t on Google Maps, does the road truly exist?  Maybe when you turn down one of these haunted road trips to Take This Halloween, you might discover the unknown, see the forbidden… or even try to forget you even came.

1. Clinton Road, New Jersey
   Oh, Clinton Road. Where do we even start? Phantom cars, creepy lights, and a ghost boy who returns your coins if you toss them in the river? No thanks. And let’s not forget the Jersey Devil lurking around. Honestly, who thought this was a good idea for a road trip?

2. Route 66, California
   Sure, Route 66 is iconic, but did anyone mention the ghost towns and disappearing hitchhikers? Because that’s a hard pass for me. It’s like the road itself is daring you to keep driving. Nostalgia is great and all, but not when it comes with a side of “Is that a ghost in my backseat?”

3. Ohio State Reformatory, Mansfield, Ohio
   A haunted prison? Really? This place is crawling with ghostly inmates, and you’re supposed to just… walk around? In the dark? With ghost-hunting equipment? I’ll be over here, not doing that, thank you very much.

   A haunted restaurant with a ghost dog? Okay, that’s kind of cute… until you feel a cold breeze and realize it’s not the AC. I just wanted some fried green tomatoes, not a side of paranormal activity.

   Salem is synonymous with Halloween. Salem is all fun and games until you’re walking those haunted streets and hear whispers from the witch trials. A ghost tour here is basically a history lesson with a side of “what was that noise?” I’m sweating just thinking about it.

   This road is haunted by a spectral woman in white. Why are they always in white? Cars are known to stall for no reason. Oh, and it’s pitch black at night. Sounds like a great way to ruin a perfectly good rental car.

2. Karak Highway, Malaysia
   Ghostly apparitions, a creepy yellow Volkswagen Beetle, and a boy searching for his mom? Also, what is it with the yellow VW Beetles?   This highway is basically a ghost convention on this haunted road trip. I’ll pass, but thanks for the nightmares.

3. Pluckley Village, United Kingdom
   The most haunted village in England? Maybe Halloween is as infamous here, but the haunted road trip to this destination is enough to make you contemplate staying the night in this village.  Sure, let’s just stroll through streets filled with restless spirits like it’s no big deal. Ghostly Highwayman? Watercress Woman? I don’t even know what that is, but I’m already scared.
