Top 10 Shows on Disney+ This Week!
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is set in the post-Return of the Jedi Era and follows a group of four children, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Robert Timothy Smith, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, and Kyriana Kratter, as the central group, who find themselves lost in the galaxy after making a mysterious discovery on their home planet! On their journey to finding their way back, they encounter danger, strangers, and unlikely allies, all while trying to navigate the vast and unpredictable elements of the Star Wars universe.
Now, this might sound like a kids’ show because the protagonists are kids, but you’d be wrong. Instead, it’s another excellent coming-of-age sci-fi adventure, which includes Jude Law playing an unnamed Force-sensitive guide who helps the children on this journey. With the connection to The Mandalorian timeline, along with being executive produced by David Filoni and Jon Favreau, Skeleton Crew brings a new tone by connecting youthful adventures with galactic danger while still providing the familiar Star Wars feeling.
Renegade Nell
Renegade Nell is a historical fantasy adventure that follows Nell Jackson (Louisa Harland), who is wrongly accused of murder. Nell becomes a highwaywoman when forced to flee with her two younger sisters, but once she encounters a magical sprite named Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed), she’s granted supernatural abilities that put her right in the middle of a much bigger conflict that involves dark magic, political conspiracy, and royal secrets. Created and written by Sally Wainwright, who’s known for her strong female leads, does it again with the character of Nell Jackson here.
Those already into the show have praised Harland’s performance by explaining that she brings “both vulnerability and bravado to a new kind of British heroine.” With fast-paced storytelling, world-building, supernatural twists on 1700s England, clever writing, and a strong female lead, Renegade Nell will quickly become your next new obsession!
Echo
First appearing in Hawkeye, Echo centers on Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), a deaf Native American anti-hero who returns to her hometown in Oklahoma to confront her past, reconnect with her roots, and reconcile her identity as both a hero and someone raised by crime. However, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) is her adoptive uncle and criminal mentor, so this task will not be easy.
Diving into strong themes of trauma, heritage, redemption, and how cultural identity shapes personal power, Echo is considered to be one of Marvel’s most grounded projects to date, with a tone very similar to the beloved shows of Daredevil and The Punisher. Surrounded by an excellent supporting cast of Chaske Spencer, Devery Jacobs, Tantoo Cardinal, and Graham Greene, as well as a cameo appearance from Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Echo provides viewers with a raw, emotional, and grounded series that is quite refreshing along with being a landmark moment with its incredible representation for Indigenous and disabled individuals in mainstream media!
The Wonder Years
A reimagining of the classic from 1988, The Wonder Years, ran from 2021-2023, providing viewers with a fresh perspective by following Dean Williams (Elisha “EJ” Williams), a 12-year-old Black boy growing up in 1960s Montgomery, Alabama. Told through the perspective of Adult Dean, narrated by Don Cheadle, the show captures the joys, awkwardness, and growing pains of adolescence while also doing an excellent job of weaving in the complexities of the social and racial dynamics of the time.
The series supporting cast includes Dule Hill and Saycon Sengbloh as Bill and Lillian Williams, who are Dean’s parents, and Laura Kariuki as Kim Williams, Dean’s older sister who is no stranger to challenging social norms and pushing boundaries! As conversations around representation and historical context remain vital, The Wonder Years stands out for balancing education with heartfelt and relatable storytelling, which is what has made it regain popularity as of late, and why it should absolutely be on your next must-watch list!
The Acolyte
The Acolyte is a Star Wars series that brilliantly blends Jedi lore with a murder mystery as they explore the dark side of the Force during the final days of the High Republic. During this time, the Jedi Order was at its peak and the Sith were believed to be completely extinct, however, the series quickly dives into a crime that forces a respected Jedi Master to reunite with a former Padawan who then uncovers a sinister force that’s been brewing in the shadows for quite some time.
With a cast consisting of Carrie-Anne Moss as Indara, the high-ranking Jedi Master, Amandla Stenberg as Mae, the complex former Padawan, Lee Jung-jae as Master Sol, as well as Manny Jacinto, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Dafne Keen, The Acolyte offers a fresh yet even darker angle on the Star Wars mythology. It’s fresh because we don’t see a galaxy full of chaos, instead, we see a polished Jedi institution and the first major live-action Star Wars series to dive deeply into Sith mythology and pre-Skywalker history!
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
This Marvel series follows Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), a sharp lawyer who suddenly gains Hulk-like powers after a blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). However, unlike Bruce, Jennifer can control her transformation and remain conscious while in Hulk form. Even as Jennifer juggles high-profile superhuman legal cases, her awkward dating life, and her new dual identity, the series does a great job of blending superhero action with a sort of workplace comedy, including frequently breaking the fourth wall, while exploring themes of feminism, fame, and identity.
With its sharp writing, strong performance from Maslany, a supporting cast that includes Jameela Jamil as Titania, Ginger Gonzaga as Nikki Ramos, Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/Abomination, cameos like Wong, Daredevil, and even Megan Thee Stallion (yes, you read that right), She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has found a new appreciation with fans lately. It manages to blend charm, commentary, and chaos, without the universe-ending stakes, and is perfect for anyone who loves MCU lore, legal comedies, and funny women owning their power!
The Beatles: Get Back
Put together using almost 60 hours of unseen footage and 150 hours of unheard audio captured back in 1969, The Beatles: Get Back is a three-part documentary series directed by Peter Jackson that chronicles the legendary band’s creative process. The docuseries presents quite an intimate and joyful look back at the Beatles through their camaraderie, struggles, musical genius, writing processes, and even rehearsals for some iconic songs that would be on their final album, Let It Be.
John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr are all seen throughout the film, along with appearances from Yoko Ono, Linda McCartney, Billy Preston, and George Martin. Even years after its 2021 release on Disney+, it’s still heavily discussed and continues to be considered a masterclass in creativity, collaboration, and conflict resolution. If you love music, history, or behind-the-scenes storytelling, this series is a cultural treasure that puts you in the room with the musical genius’s work. It was an easy choice for this week’s top 10 shows on Disney+ that you should be watching either for the first time or all over again!
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi is set ten years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, where we find the Jedi Master still hiding in exile on Tatooine, watching over a young Luke Skywalker from afar, as promised. You quickly realize that even after many years, Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) is still haunted by the events that transpired and has completely disconnected from the Force and the galaxy. However, once Princess Leia is kidnapped, Obi-Wan has to come out of hiding. This series does an incredible job of being able to bridge the large gap between the prequels and the original trilogy, providing viewers with emotional closure and some much-needed new depth to familiar characters.
With the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader, Vivien Lyra Blair as the young spunky Leia Organa, Moses Ingram as Reva/ The Third Sister, and featured appearances from Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, and O’Shea Jackson Jr, Obi-Wan Kenobi continues to trend on Disney+ because of its rewatch value, emotional face-off, and the show’s character-driven approach! It won’t matter if you’re a lifelong fan or newly exploring the saga (lucky you, I wish I could watch this again for the first time), it’s a must-watch and truly should have already been on your watchlist as one of the top 10 shows on Disney+ right now!
Moon Knight
Moon Knight does an incredible job of introducing a new sort of Marvel hero, one with multiple personalities, ancient Egyptian powers, and a deeply fractured mind; sold already? I quickly was! Oscar Isaac plays the split personalities of Steven Grant, Marc Spector, and Moon Knight so brilliantly, and his performance alone makes the series deeply compelling and considered a must-watch. Moon Knight is a one-of-a-kind psychological action thriller that balances the superhero vibe with an intimate and stunning exploration of mental illness and ancient mythology.
The supporting cast of May Calamawy as Layla El-Faouly, Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow, and F. Murray Abraham, who voices Khonshu, helps Isaac to bring a unique tone to this Marvel series and simply relies on the complete, character-centric storytelling. It’s also been highly praised for its accurate and respectful portrayal of Dissociative Identity Disorder and the excellent way it showcases Egyptian culture. There’s no doubt this series will keep you on your toes and in your feels from start to finish!
Jessica Jones
This Marvel series, centered on the character of Jessica Jones, played by Krysten Ritter, follows Jones, a former superhero turned private investigator with super strength and a haunted past. Throughout the series, she uses her PI skills to track down cheaters, liars, and criminals throughout Hell’s Kitchen, New York, until her past begins to resurface, when a man with mind-control abilities, Kilgrave (David Tennant), returns.
With a supporting cast consisting of Rachael Taylor as Trish Walker, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, and Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth, Jessica Jones is regaining popularity right now, mostly because of the idea of her returning in season two of Daredevil: Born Again! However, in my opinion, with or without her impending appearance in this series, this Marvel series is more than worth an intense binge-watch!
With its gritty tone, complex themes, and boundary-pushing storytelling, Jessica Jones has a very different feeling to it than other MCU series, which is what gives it its special appeal. It’s considered one of the most mature and powerful stories that Marvel has ever told, and was an easy pick for this week’s top 10 shows on Disney+!
