Top 10 Shows on Disney Plus This Week!
Star Wars: Tales of the Empire
This Star Wars adventure is a compelling animated anthology that offers a fresh look at the Star Wars universe from the Empire’s side. Its animation and deep storytelling allow it to explore what drives those who decided to abandon the Jedi and embrace the Empire.
With key characters of Barriss Offee, voiced by Meredith Salenger, who was a former Jedi Padawan, and Morgan Elsbeth, voiced by Diana Lee Inosanto, a Nightsister and future Magistrate, Star Wars: Tales of the Empire is for those who truly love Star Wars lore and all the complexities and moral ambiguities within it, and who want to dive into more of the short-form storytelling that gives more insights into this gigantic universe that has so much to still discover and explore.
What If…?
What If…? is the MCU’s multiverse playground. This animated anthology series reimagines pivotal Marvel moments with new outcomes, with each episode posing the question of “What if a single decision changed everything?” Throughout the show, you’ll hear the voice of Jeffrey Wright, who is The Watcher, the narrator overseeing the multiverse, along with the talents of Chadwick Boseman, Hayley Atwell, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, and more, who voice their MCU characters in this reimagined universe.
From zombie Avengers to a villainous Doctor Strange, this series does a serious fan service by creating mind-bending episodes that are not only emotionally resonant but pretty visually striking as well!
Goosebumps: Season One
This series, starring Justin Long as Mr. Bratt, a teacher possessed by a vengeful spirit, breathes new life into R.L Stine’s iconic franchise, creating something much darker and character-driven. Complete with a teen ensemble cast, the show merges classic Goosebumps tales into a modern narrative, which provides fans with a dose of nostalgia with genuine frights and great production value!
While I’ve only included the first season on the list of the top 10 shows on Disney+ for this week, there is also a season two titled Goosebumps: The Vanishing which stars David Schwimmer and you do not need to watch season one to understand season two, but it does give you an excellent opportunity for a nice long two season binge-watch this week!
Star Wars: Visions
Considered to be a breathtaking collection of anime-inspired shorts, Star Wars: Visions reinterprets Star Wars mythology through the lens of global animation! Being that it is also non-canonical, it provides the writers with a lot of creative freedom, which adds to the magic that can be created.
The series also includes voice talent from stars like Lucy Liu, Simu Liu, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and more! If you’re one who loves Star Wars, anime, and/or visionary storytelling, these shorts are certainly worth watching. With two volumes to watch through, there is no Star Wars prior knowledge necessary to dive right in to explore the Force mythos and the underrepresented corners of the galaxy!
Ms. Marvel
Starring Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, an awkward and deeply relatable fangirl-turned-hero, Ms. Marvel is considered to be one of Marvel’s most refreshing coming-of-age stories. Throughout the series, you follow Kamala as she struggles to find a way to balance high school, family, and her newfound superpowers.
With some excellent visuals, great authentic representation, and deeply emotional storytelling, Ms. Marvel uses its groundbreaking representation for South Asian and Muslim communities in the MCU, giving a different, fresh perspective inside the Marvel Universe.
Muppets Mayhem
With the likes of Dr. Teeth, Animal, Janice, Floyd, Zoot, and Lips, your favorite Muppet bandmates of the Electric Mayhem band, are back and better than ever, along with their A&R executive who is helping the band find their groove (played by Lilly Singh).
Muppets Mayhem is a hilarious, heartwarming series that infuses the rock ‘n’ roll spirit coming across like a love letter to music lovers and Muppet fans full of cameos and catchy songs, that brings together the older generation with a new one all with the classic Muppets humor.
Phineas and Ferb
Not all classics hold up the way Phineas and Ferb do! With two genius stepbrothers, Phineas Flynn (Vincent Martella) and Ferb Fletcher (Thomas Sangster and David Errigo Jr), are creative masterminds who build outrageous inventions every day of summer while their older sister, Candace Flynn (Ashley Tisdale), tries to bust them. And of course, there is a lovable villain with Dr. Doofenshmirtz (Dan Povenmire), to really mix things up, plus other voices return to the series as well, like Dee Bradley Baker as Perry and Alyson Stoner as Isabella.
The series is clever, full of some unforgettable musical numbers, and so many inventive plots, making this series endlessly bingeable and popular with kids and adults! The best part?! After a 10-year hiatus, the series has returned with 40 new episodes, considered to be their fifth season, and has all dropped at the beginning of June, making this an excellent binge-watching choice for the whole family!
Luke Cage
Starring Mike Colter as the stoic, strong, and deeply moral main character, Luke Cage, is a gritty, socially conscious Marvel series set in Harlem. Cage is a bulletproof man with a heart of gold, who becomes an urban legend and a reluctant hero.
With a supporting cast of Simon Missick as the tough-as-nails detective Misty Knight, and Mahershala Ali as Cottonmouth, one of Marvel’s most charismatic villains, and Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard, a politician with a sinister edge, Luke Cage is one of the most grounded Marvel series. It tackles race, power, and identity with an incredible cast and a pretty great soundtrack, too!
Taylor Swift: The Era Tour (Taylor’s Version)
Complete with a stunning visual production, passionate energy, personal insights, and behind-the-scenes glimpses, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) is a cinematic event that brings Swift’s iconic concert tour to the screen.
Featuring all of her eras, it almost doesn’t matter if you’re a Swifty or just curious about her; this is a music documentary that feels as epic as it is intimate. You get to witness her legacy as a generational talent, while blending music with storytelling, and a look into the special fan connections.
Sea Lions of the Galapagos
This stunning National Geographic documentary is available on Disney+ and was an easy inclusion into this week’s top 10 shows on Disney because of the way it captures the life cycle, threats, and incredible beauty of sea lions in one of the Earth’s most isolated ecosystems!
Shot on location and narrated by experienced naturalists, it’s both a visual and educational treat for anyone. It dives into the complex social structures, harsh environmental challenges, and the true uniqueness of the species, all with some incredibly stunning wildlife cinematography!
