Tomb Raider has been around for decades, and Lara Croft has been on screens since the first Tomb Raider video game in 1996! There are Tomb Raider fans worldwide, many of whom were excited by this new media. Amazon Prime Video had officially revealed plans for the new TV series based on the games in May 2024.

This was a prime time for more Lara Croft content, with Netflix’s anime series, a rumored new game, and this in-development Amazon series, but the series might be canceled before it even starts. The series was being developed and scripted by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known as the creator of Fleabag and the head writer of Killing Eve, and the Game of Thrones star, Sophie Turner, was rumored to be playing Lara Croft.

If the rumors are true, this project has been not just put on hold, but completely abandoned. In a report from The Daily Mail, a source described the series as “dead” and added, “I hear that it is not going ahead.”

Reports have stated that Sophie Turner will be busy with films for the rest of the year and that Jennifer Salke, who had originally given the project the green light, is no longer the head of Amazon Studios. While that doesn’t look good for the series, remember that there has been no official comment or confirmation from Amazon or Waller-Bridges representatives, so the show might still be coming.

Waller-Bridge had been very excited when the series pickup was announced at the Upfront presentation and had this to say: “If I could tell teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.”

Waller-Bridge went on to tell Vanity Fair, “She had an attitude. She was very deliberate in what she wanted to do. That all changed when they realized that they could market her to be a sex symbol. She’s a tomb raider, so she’s incredibly fit. She has to squeeze through tiny rock crevices all the time. It is a different experience squeezing through a small rock crevice when you have larger boobs than if you have smaller boobs.”

Whether or not Amazon Prime Video has or has not canceled their adaptation of Tomb Raider, there is always more media to be found. You can also revisit your old favorites, whether that be video games, movies, or the Netflix series. For as long as we want it, there will be more Tomb Raider content to come.
