Tom Petty

On Friday, fans of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers received a “save the date” announcement for the October 18 release of the newly remastered deluxe edition of the band’s classic 1982 album Long After Dark. The announcement also included a new single release of “Straight Into Darkness – French TV,” now available on streaming platforms. The re-release celebrates the fifth studio album from the popular Florida rock band by including 12 “rediscovered” tracks, of which seven are previously unreleased.

The release of Long After Dark deluxe edition comes 40 years after Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released the original album. In a 1989 Spin interview with Paul Zollo for a limited interview series, Conversations with Tom Petty, Petty said he thought Long After Dark was a tough project because he wasn’t sure if the band and producers were making correct song decisions.

According to Friday’s press release from Universal Music Canada, the Petty Legacy archives are set to unveil previously unseen and newly remastered audio and film clips from the era. The first release to promote the deluxe edition features a French TV rendition of the song “Straight Into Darkness.” Directed by Alan Bibby, the video shows Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performing the hit song at the Record Plant in Sausalito, California.

What’s Included

Pre-orders have begun for the Long After Dark deluxe edition CD. The two-CD set with Blu-ray audio disc is available for pre-order on the official Tom Petty website for $29.98. The Blu-ray audio disc features hi-res stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes with bonus tracks.  There are two vinyl options available on the website. The first option is a 2-LP 180-gram black vinyl for $39.98. A 2-LP 180-gram colored vinyl (red and black) limited numbered edition is also available for $79.98. A third, limited edition 1 LP turquoise color vinyl pressing of the main album will be available at indie record stores. This release will include a double-sided lithograph of Blaze Brooks illustrations.

Behind the Scenes

In the Universal Music Canada release, producer Jimmy Iovine said when Long After Dark was completed, the team felt they had “one of those records.” He compared the album to Bob Dylan’s Positively 4th Street. Along with founding members Mike Campbell on lead guitar, Benmont Tench on keyboards, and Stan Lynch on drums, Long After Dark was also notable because it was the first Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album to feature Howie Epstein on bass and backing vocals.

In Conclusion

For classic rock fans, especially collectors, the news of this release is exciting. Although the release also features “rediscovered” songs, it also highlights and celebrates the success of the original album. The 1982 version of the Long After Dark album reached number nine on the Billboard 200. It was fascinating to learn that Petty had reservations about the album, and it should be interesting to hear the reworked songs on October 18.
