Tom Felton is best known for playing Draco Malfoy, the Slytherin bully in the Harry Potter series. He played the role in all eight of the mainline Potter films and grew up with the series. Now, fourteen years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Felton is returning to the wizarding world.
Tom Felton’s Return to Draco Malfoy
Felton will be reprising his role as Draco Malfoy this November in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which takes place after the seven Harry Potter books and focuses on the next generation of Hogwarts students. This marks the first time an actor from the original Potter films has reprised their role on stage. Tom Felton said in a statement:
Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life . . . Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play. It’s surreal to be stepping back into his shoes – and of course his iconic platinum blond hair – and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world.
Harry Potter and Controversy
While many still love the wizarding world, Harry Potter has seen some controversy in recent years. Cursed Child has met with mixed reception, with some people criticizing its lack of originality and its treatment of the Potter characters. The upcoming Harry Potter reboot has fans questioning the necessity of its existence, since they already love the original Potter films. Perhaps most serious of all is how author J.K. Rowling has attacked the trans community on social media, making it hard for some people to reconcile with being both Potter fans and trans allies.
How Long Will Tom Felton be in Cursed Child?
Felton will be playing Draco Malfoy from November 11 to March 26. Despite the controversy surrounding Harry Potter, fans will undoubtedly be lining up to see him. It will be like returning to a piece of their childhoods and finding that it has grown up alongside them.
