If you’ve ever tried learning a new language, you know that it’s hard. The reading, the writing, and don’t even get me started on the speaking part with all the pronunciation that always seems to get butchered. There’s only so much you learn and so much research before it feels like you’re getting nowhere with learning.
But have you ever considered that simple learning techniques might not work as well, even if it’s done correctly? With as many options and tips as there are, maybe there is something that can help you learn better than your first attempt. And all you have to do is look for it.
Audio Can Help When Learning A New Language
With the expansion of listening to music and watching different movies and TV shows in various languages, audio has become a great way for people to learn. When listening to audio, the best is TV shows and movies, and even better is cartoons.
While you can listen to regular shows, cartoons tend to speak slower, making it easier to understand what they are saying and to be able to hear the pronunciation of words. With normal shows, it might be better to listen once you get more advanced because if you start there, you have a high chance of not learning or retaining anything.
Music is also a good way to go. You’d get the chance to listen to 3 minutes of songs. This is harder than watching shows because music is usually fast tempo, but having an app like Lirica, which breaks down music, can help. Everyone’s favorite things can help you learn a new language!
Getting Immersed
Doing physical things is the best way to get by with learning a new language and remembering what you are learning. When getting immersed, there are a ton of things that can be done to start practicing and learning.
Labeling items in your household is a great way to start because you then get to see what the item is and the word that goes with it. It’s very physical because it makes you have to remember the labeled item since you will always see it.
Another way to get immersed would be writing, either physically or on your keyboard. When writing physically, like notes, you can remember the figures and letters of the language that you are learning, making it easier to commit to memory.
The same is true with a keyboard, yet a tad different. That is because if you add the language keyboard to your device, you are going to be able to type out what you’d like and it would be a lot easier to try it out with others who are speaking or learning the same language digitally.
Even with learning the names of things and how to write in your chosen language, the most important part of learning is being able to speak the language. Going to places where you can speak the language you’re learning, like a restaurant or maybe travel plans if you can afford it, are great ways to get to talking. If not, there are digital sites or apps that can help you communicate with others who might be advanced in the language.
Doing things that get you immersed is your best bet when trying to learn.
Apps
Since the development of technology, many app developers have decided that the best way to attract people’s attention is to create apps that help others in many ways, just like learning a new language, which is something that many people are interested in doing.
Duolingo is an app that is very well-known for helping people learn a new language. But, it’s not always best to just have and use one app because there are chances that the app doesn’t expand on bigger topics and sentences.
As for Duolingo, no shame to the app, but it will 100% work better with another app enforcing what is being learned in your chosen language. An app like Memrise would best be paired with Duolingo since it’s where you can practice conversations in the new language you’d be learning.
But if that doesn’t interest you, apps like Busuu, where you can talk to your peers, and Lingoda, an app where you can take live classes, are best fits if you’d like to practice and get actual learning for your language.
Since there are so many different tips for learning a new language, you might have already heard of them or maybe you haven’t, but hearing something isn’t trying it. If it’s audio, being immersed, or using apps that get you invested to find a way that works for you to learn a new language, do it.
There’s so much that can be done in your life, and learning a new language will be a fun experience because of all you can do with the knowledge. Learning a new language can also be a bonus when looking for a job or a new one when unemployed.
You only get to live one life. Do and try new things. And best wishes to learn your new language.
