2025s Thunderbolts* Cast Empowers Explosive MCU Future

The cast of Marvel's Thunderbolts*

Numerous MCU characters will return for Marvel Studios Thunderbolts*, showing a dark spin on an Avengers-like superhero team. The team was announced as part of the MCU timeline in July 2022. Initially, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Widow writer Eric Pearson was set to work on the script but was replaced by Beef’s Lee Sung Jin.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige revealed the Thunderbolts* cast, with several actors reprising their morally questionable characters. The movie will be a sequel to The Falcon & the Winter Solider, Black Widow, Ant-Man & The Wasp, and Captain America: New World Order. The movie will bring together a few antiheroes and villains who haven’t previously met.

The movie was initially set to arrive on July 26, when Deadpool and Wolverine were released in theatres. Thunderbolts* was then delayed to December 20, 2024, and then to July 25, 2025, before moving up to its current release date.

Thunderbolts* Cast

The cast list was revealed during the D23 Expo in September 2022, consisting of Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Sabastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, David Harbour as Red Guardian, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

Louis-Dreyfus has appeared in past Marvel films and series in cameos and post-credit scenes. In a 2023 interview with Variety, Louis-Dreyfus said, “I told them I want to fight. We’ll see if that happens. I haven’t seen the script yet.” She expressed her desire to be more involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Also, the film added Superman star Wendell Pierce and True Blood’s Chris Bauer in undisclosed roles. Pierce was cast as the DCU’s Perry White in Superman in March. He will play the Daily Planet’s editor-in-chief, and if Pierce’s role comes to pass, it would mean he’d debut in the MCU and DCU in the same year.

What To Know About Thunderbolts*

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the cast and crew premiered the film’s first footage on stage. The footage was screened behind closed doors. The trailer was then released to the public and is currently available online. The footage starts with Yelena reuniting with her “dad” Aleksei (a.k.a Red Guardian). Red Guardian looks poised to be Thunderbolts* comic relief while trying to be a father to his surrogate daughter.

The trailer also explains what some other members have been up to, such as John Walker becoming a dad. Yelena and Walker are both recruited to find an item of interest, leading them to come face to face. Additionally, they come across Ghost and Taskmaster, both with new comic-accurate suits. They engage in combat at first until they are interrupted by a man named Bob, played by Lewis Pullman.

Little do they know how important Bob is. He will be the seed behind the creation of a new superhero team. A team that will be worthy of being on a Wheaties box, per Red Guardian’s own words. When the antiheroes encounter Bob, they start to realize that they may have been set up. Jake Schrier will be the Thunderbolts* director. He also directed the critically acclaimed Robot & Frank (2012) and followed up with Paper Towns three years later.

Final Thoughts

Thunderbolts* will hit the big screens on May 2, 2025, and will be the last Phase 5 film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
