The computer-animated series, Gremlins: The Wild Batch, is the next season of the Gremlins series, where the first was called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. The cartoon series was first aired at two film festivals on June 13th in the US and June 16th in France, both in 2022. After that, it was released to the rest of the world through the internet in 2023. The story takes place in China and follows the adventures of a young boy named Sam Wing, and a Mogwai called Gizmo.
Gremlins
Before discussing The Wild Batch, it’s best first to become familiar with the original Gremlins 1984 movie to avoid any confusion. Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, and The Wild Batch, are intended to be the prequel series to the 1984 film, the original Gremlins film. The movie was a horror and comedy film about a young man who forgets the 3 important rules set for his newly acquired pet. This causes a mass of mischievous monsters similar to the pet, to be unleashed in his town.
Secrets of the Mogwai (Season 1)
This is the prequel to the film and current horror-themed cartoon of the franchise. It tells the story of how Sam Wing, a boy yearning for courage, befriended the Mogwai called Gizmo as a boy. The first season has 10 episodes, with the first officially released long after its appearance during the 2022 film festival, on May 23rd, 2023. The setting is 1920s Shanghai, China. The cartoon is appropriate for children and serves its purpose to teach the history of the Mogwai.
The Wild Batch (Season 2)
The second season of the Gremlins cartoon series, The Wild Batch aired its first episode on October 3rd, 2024. Now with Sam’s entire family involved, the adventures continue. Only this season some new problems have arisen and are related to the Mogwai. Along with these new problems, his Mogwai friend Gizmo begins to act strange around the same time, either adding to or relating to these new issues.
So far in the second season, there are currently 5 episodes of The Wild Batch, which were all rapidly released around the same time as the first. This is because they are part 1 of The Wild Batch season. Set one year after season 1, the first episode is a reminder of adventure. The next four episodes that come after are cleverly named similar to the rules of what not to do with or around a Mogwai.
Season 2 Review
This time, the setting takes place in America, with the cast having gone to San Francisco’s Chinatown after hearing about a new evil Mogwai group. The Wild Batch has a small contrast to the first season as it revolves more around the mystical and mischievous adventures with a Mogwai. Secrets of the Mogwai revolved mostly around the worldbuilding, the origin story of Sam Wing, and the proper introduction of Mogwai. The Wild Batch is also the season that further correlates to the events in the 1984 Gremlins movie.
The main cast is currently going through some major developments. Sam is no longer fine with his parents planning his life now that he has more courage. His friend Elle has been having dreams about her mother, Gizmo is going through some form of his kind’s puberty, and none of them know how to deal with their situations. While Secrets of the Mogwai included more magic, The Wild Batch focuses not only on Noggin and the evil Mogwai but also on subplots, such as personal issues.
The kids are growing with their audience and wish to learn without their parents guiding them. Thus, this season, the parents and Sam’s Grandfather don’t appear as much. As good as this is, they are still children. To help Sam with his character development without becoming overbearing, the writers have given him an older brother figure named Simu Liu. Liu acts as a guide for Sam and Elle since his father runs Chinatown, and he wants to take over for him. He is more mature, older, and bigger than Sam and Elle, yet still young enough to relate with them.
Conclusion
Gremlins: The Wild Batch came in 2024 and is the second season following the first season, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai which aired in 2023. The first part of this season has 5 episodes that take place a year after the first season. The trio has moved to San Francisco’s Chinatown in the US after hearing of a new evil Mogwai group run by their old enemy Noggin. The Wild Batch now includes both the plot about dealing with evil Gremlins and subplots of the kids having personal issues and learning to grow. Instead of parental figures, to better relate with the growing audience, an older brother figure was introduced.
