The Odyssey Huge Blockbuster 1st Look Teaser Leaks Online

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey

Although it is showing exclusively in theatres, the first teaser for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has leaked online. Universal has aggressively taken them down, but not all of them. The film is currently in production and is scheduled to be released in theaters next year. The studio has marked the trailer as a “mythic action epic” ahead of Jurassic Park: Rebirth, which had its first screening Tuesday evening.

The trailer for The Odyssey wasn’t officially released online. Understandably, Nolan likes his trailers to be an exclusively cinematic experience. His Oscar-winning 2023 hit Oppenheimer also debuted its first teaser trailer exclusively in theaters. Unfortunately, many people have smartphones, and a lot of them were recording the teaser in theaters, leading to leaks online. The teaser appeared on X immediately, and the video, of course, is less than cinematic in quality.

The Odyssey is still filming and won’t be released until next year. Given that Jurassic Park: Rebirth is expected to be a box office hit, it makes sense to couple it with Nolan’s upcoming film for its first big push. It’s not surprising that the trailer is a teaser since filming of the ancient Greek poem is still underway. Universal Studios greenlit this coming project. The teaser of The Odyssey begins with a voiceover and shots of a dark ocean.

The voice says, “Darkness. Zues’ law smashed to pieces. I’m without a king since my master died. He knew it was an unwinnable war. And then, somehow, he won it.” The shot shows Tom Holland as Odysseus’ son, Telemachus, having a discussion with a not-yet-named character played by Jon Bernthal. Sitting next to him is Lupita Nyong’o, although her face is blurred by the camera.

Telemachus says, “I have yet to find out what happened to my father.” Berthnal’s character loudly responds, “Who has a story about Odysseus? You? You have a story? Some say he’s rich. Some say he’s poor. Some said he perished. Some said he’s imprisoned.” The trailer features additional shots of the ocean and a glimpse of the Trojan Horse. Then the teaser shows a man stranded in the middle of the ocean, lying on some wood, presumably Matt Damon as Odysseus.

Final Thoughts

The star-studded cast includes Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Mia Goth, and Charlize Theron. The Odyssey has a budget of $250 million, which makes the movie the most expensive in Nolan’s career. It will be first film in a huge scope to be shot entirely in IMAX cameras. The classic poem follows a king of Ithaca undertaking a long journey home after the Trojan War. Odysseus encounters mythical beings such as Circe, the Cyclops Polyphemus, and the Sirens. He then goes to the Underworld after meeting such beings. The film will hit theatres on July 17, 2026.
