New Mummy Sequel Title Revealed Ahead of 2027 Release

Universal Pictures announced on Thursday that the fourth Mummy film will be called The Mummy: Book of the Dead, giving fans an official name for the long-awaited sequel ahead of its Oct. 15, 2027 release, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The title lands a year to the day before the movie hits theaters.

Brendan Fraser returns as Rick O’Connell and Rachel Weisz is back as Evie O’Connell, reprising the roles that anchored the original two-film franchise. John Hannah also returns to the cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Mummy: Book Of The Dead Title And Cast Details

The new title separates this project from earlier reporting on the franchise’s revival, which had not specified a name for the fourth installment. Universal’s announcement now gives fans a concrete title to search for and attach to the 2027 date.

The cast list also includes Michael Johnston, Numan Acar, Kevin J. O’Connor and Oded Fehr, per The Hollywood Reporter. Radio Silence directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are set to direct the film from a script by David Coggeshall. Sean Daniel, who has produced five previous titles in the Mummy franchise, is producing this one as well.

What It Means For Fans

The Mummy: Book of the Dead is described as a direct sequel to 1999’s The Mummy and its 2001 follow-up The Mummy Returns, the two films that made up the original Fraser-Weisz run. Those two movies combined grossed more than $1.8 billion worldwide, a box office track record that explains why Universal is bringing the core duo back rather than rebooting the series. The original 1999 film was directed by Stephen Sommers.

Set photos have suggested the new film may take place in the late 1950s, according to Polygon, though no plot details have been revealed. For longtime fans, the returning cast and the direct-sequel framing suggest the story will continue the O’Connell family’s adventures rather than start over with new characters.

Background And Context

The franchise’s third film, 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, has become something of a punchline among the cast. At Comic Con Holland, Oded Fehr joked during a joint interview with John Hannah that only two Mummy movies exist, brushing aside the third entry entirely. Hannah pushed back on the claim, and Fehr conceded, “No, there were two. But, it’s a disagreement.”

The exchange highlights how closely this new sequel is being tied to the original two films rather than the franchise’s later entries, a framing that matches Universal’s own description of Book of the Dead as a direct continuation of the 1999 and 2001 movies.

What’s Next

The Mummy: Book of the Dead is set for release on Oct. 15, 2027. No plot synopsis, trailer or additional casting has been announced. Fans can expect more details, including story specifics and possible first-look footage, as Universal moves closer to production updates in the coming months.
