The gripping film brings us back to the start of Snow, how he came to be, and what made him develop into the cruel monster that he was later on in the series. The Hunger Games isn’t all post-modern – this story details the backstory of how everything we know to be true officially came to be.
The Hunger Games – Backstory
In this movie of The Hunger Games series, the story details Snow’s backstory, giving viewers information about why he turned out the way that he did. In the later movies, he is a person with no remorse and a seemingly evil way of looking at children suffering and fighting against each other. It makes you wonder how he came up with this idea, and what led him to think it was morally sound.
We travel back in time to see Snow as a student, struggling to get by and put food on the table for his family. He is extremely poor but puts on a brave face, trying to fit in at school and earn the coveted scholarship that would see his family able to make it through their desperate financial times.
The story is set in Panem, the dystopian world of modern North America, made up of 13 districts and the all-ruling Capital. The Capitol is the only district that has money, attractions, amenities, or goods. Living lavishly while the districts surrounding the metropolis are starving and barely getting by. Each district has specific goods they produce to help the central economy, such as oil or fish.
After an unsuccessful rebellion by the citizens that went on for a staggering three years, the Capital decided to come up with the ‘hunger games’ concept to control the population. Each district was made to send a boy and girl to fight to the death in an arena. The process of selecting each boy and girl was known as “The Reaping,” with only one survivor being claimed as the winner. This tortuous method was used to punish the citizens and remind every person in Panem who held power — the Capitol.
The Hunger Games Arena — Then vs. Now
The arena in the previous decades was much less of a spectacle than in the modern movies featuring Jennifer Lawrence. The old-school arena featured solely the tributes, weapons, and nothing else, leading to a death match that would end in just a few hours.

We loved The Hunger Games – and especially this movie. It gives viewers a chance to see President Snow’s backstory and his humble beginnings and even makes you feel for the character. However, as the movie progresses, you start to see cracks in his facade and understand how he descended into the morally corrupt person that he was in the later Hunger Games films. We see a well-meaning student become a twisted and devious mastermind. He initially begins by trying to help his family and friends and slowly changes into a corrupted man who yearns for power.
