Four days ago, Paramount Pictures released the official trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, placing its star-studded cast on display for all to see. Fans have been waiting for the third installment in the highly successful live-action franchise since February 2022, and now its theatrical release is only four months away. Cast announcements were finalized and released early this year, confirming suspicions of returning and new cast members like Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves. Finally, after months of waiting, fans are getting a first look at the film and its illustrious cast in action.
The Voice Cast
Via motion capture, Ben Schwartz has been the voice and face of Sonic the Hedgehog since his involvement in the live-action series was first announced in late 2018. With his long and successful career in physical and voice acting, it’s no wonder he scored the role of the beloved blue hedgehog. Colleen O’Shaughnessey, known for her work on Danny Phantom, Digimon, and Naruto, provides the voice and facial motion capture for Tails. She has famously been the English voice of Tails in the Sonic the Hedgehog video games since 2014.
Earlier this year, it was confirmed Idris Elba would reprise his role from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) and the TV series Knuckles (2024) as Knuckles the Echidna. In 2016, the award-winning actor began his lucrative foray into voice acting with Zootopia, The Jungle Book, and Finding Dory. The newest addition to the voice cast is one fans have been waiting for, as he was a popular fan cast choice for Shadow the Hedgehog. In April of this year, it was announced that Keanu Reeves would voice the edgy hedgehog created by Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
The Live-Action Cast
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will see many returning cast members as it revisits the adventures of characters from the first two movies. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter will be reprising their roles as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, Sonic’s human allies who treat him as their son by the end of the first film. Shemar Moore, who was new to the franchise in the second movie, and Natasha Rothwell are returning to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as Randall Handel and Rachel, respectively. In addition, Adam Pally (Wade Whipple), Lee Majdoub (Agent Stone), and Tom Butler (Commander Walters) will all be returning to their roles from the first and second movies.
In April 2022, just two months after plans for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 were announced, Jim Carrey revealed that he was considering retiring from acting. In an Access Hollywood interview, Carrey claimed, “If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road.” Luckily for fans of the beloved actor, it was revealed Jim Carrey would be returning to the franchise as its villain-turned-ally, Dr. Robotnik, and his father, Ivo Robotnik.
Along with the many familiar faces and voices, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will also include some new roles. Jessica Jones‘ Krysten Ritter will make her debut in the Sonic cinematic universe as Director Rockwell. The movie will also see the arrival of Furiosa‘s Alyla Browne as Maria Robotnik, a character fans will recognize from the video games Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) and Shadow the Hedgehog (2005).
Additional Undisclosed Roles
Several more actors were announced in undisclosed roles for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. This lineup will include Sofia Pernas, known for her roles in The Young and the Restless and Jane the Virgin. Cristo Fernandez, known for his recurring role in the Ted Lasso TV series, will also make an appearance. In addition, James Wolk, who won a Golden Globe in 2013 for his work on Mad Men, secured a role that has yet to be announced. Finally, Jorma Taccone, who directed an episode of the Knuckles miniseries, was added to the cast of undisclosed roles.
Final Thoughts
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will see the gallant return of many familiar faces and voices, as the story returns to the lives of the characters from the first two films. Despite uncertainty in early 2022, Jim Carrey has returned to the franchise to once again face off against Ben Schwartz’s Sonic, but this time, Dr. Robotnik has a trick up his sleeve: Shadow the Hedgehog, portrayed by Keanu Reeves. The arrival of Shadow and Reeves in the story will make for a much darker tone than the previous films had.
