Vivienne “Vivziepop” Medrano’s Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss feature countless colorful and memorable characters. Every fan has a favorite, whether it’s a protagonist, antagonist, supporting player, or background extra. However, a group that has attracted a lot of attention is the Seven Deadly Sins. This ensemble of powerful demons rules over the Hellaverse’s realms of Hell. They are also the physical personifications of the vices they represent and practice. But did you know that these seven monarchs have an overarching circus theme?
1. The Prideful King of the Deadly Sins
Let’s start with the Sin of Pride and the King of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar. Originally an angel cast from Heaven, his circus theme is that of a ringmaster. We can see this from his overall attire, and it fits perfectly. A ringmaster essentially leads acts like how Lucifer leads Hell and the Deadly Sins.
2. A Red Dragon Rules Wrath
Next is Satan, the short-tempered ruler of the Western-themed realm of Wrath. He represents the iconic weight-lifting strongman in terms of his representative circus act. This aspect was hinted at in Season One from his workout app on Blitzø’s phone. While he doesn’t wear the traditional attire, he has muscular arms like a strongman, something that attracted the wrong deeds.
3. Gluttony’s Queen of Parties
Beelzebub rules the Gluttony Ring, often throwing insane parties where everyone can enjoy themselves. She’s themed after the animal acts that most circuses used to perform. The motif is hinted at when she flies through hoops during her Helluva Boss debut. She even wears a formal outfit inspired by classic lion tamers in Season Two’s Mastermind.
4. The Vile Jester of Greed
The disgusting and life-sucking Mammon rules over the Ring, where money talks. His jester attire alludes to him representing the clown performers in circuses. But according to fellow Sin Asmodeus, Mammon doesn’t do clown stuff and generally sucks. The clown would rather laze around, eat like a pig, and drain Hell’s bank accounts.
5. The Lustful Sin With Two Titles
Speaking of Asmodeus, he’s the Sin of Lust and ruler of succubi and incubi. His circus act is hard to pin down since many have varying opinions. Some say he’s a fire-breather given his powers and affinity for flames. Others insist he’s a magician given his attire and ‘disappearing tricks’ throughout his prominent appearances. He may be a combination of both, making him a unique Sin.
6. Envy’s Twin-Headed Bioluminescent Beauty
Leviathan governs over the still-unseen Envy Ring and its aquatic residents. It’s currently unknown what circus act she represents, but her appearance might be a clue. Her depiction showcases two heads, possibly alluding to the discontinued freak shows and sideshows. This hint would also explain her social media app, where people can ‘gawk’ at others.
7. The Sleepy Sheep of Sloth
Lastly is Belphegor, the Sin ruler of the Sloth and Hell’s medical industry. Her act is a mystery, but Sinsmas, the Season Two finale, offers a clue. Crystal balls containing Sloth Ring’s floating islands are in some background shots. These objects indicate that the multi-eyed lamb represents a circus fortune teller.
Final Thoughts
The idea of the Seven Deadly Sins based on circus acts is incredible. I have no idea what inspired Medrano to do this, but I love it! It makes these characters more interesting and drives me to want to see them more. I would especially like to see more interactions between them, like in Mastermind. The possibility is high since Medrano will have her shows intersect in the future. Either way, we fans will excitedly wait for their next major appearance.
