Podcasts. They’re on the rise for sure these days. What would you describe as the best true crime podcasts? What makes a podcast so great that you want to hear someone talk about true crime? True crime podcasts give us what we don’t have already. A different view. Another potentially different way of looking at a case. In-depth analysis of an ongoing case. So, where does your favorite true crime podcast stand in 2024? Are you a Crime Junkie? Or maybe a Morbid listener? Or how about a Dark History lover? Whatever you find yourself listening to these days, be sure to give others a try. They may change your mind.
Best True Crime Podcasts of 2024
So, what’s the first podcast that jumps to mind when someone asks for recs on a true crime podcast? There are so many good ones that it is hard not to name-drop them all. But if someone were asking me, my go-to is going to have to be Crime Junkie. I love how Ashley Flowers and Brit speak about cases and do what they can at Audiochuck to get involved and get cases noticed and/or solved.
Last year, Cosmopolitan Magazine posted the top 45 best true crime podcasts that needed to be listened to in 2024. That was the most in-depth list of true crime podcasts I have ever seen. Of course, Crime Junkies, Dark History, and Morbid were all listed, which made my little true crime heart sing with glee. Bailey Sarian has an absolute way of storytelling. She is goofy and fun and all-around great when telling the story she has for that episode. Her other podcast, Murder, Mystery, and Make-up, definitely should have made the list.
What’s not to love when you have some showing of make-up products, make-up tips, and how to do a particular style, all while talking about a true crime story? It is epically fascinating. Another podcast that Cosmopolitan should have listed is Killer Psyche by Candice DeLong. The way that Candice deep dives and explains the different things going on in the mind of the killer(s) is impressive and shocking, to say the least. Who knew that diving into the psyche of a killer could be so mind-blowing?
What Makes The Best True Crime Podcasts?
Style and storytelling are just two of the ways that a podcaster gets across to their audience. The True Crime genre is so vast and wide that there is so much still to be discovered. Sometimes, the hook is in the case itself that draws an audience in. Sometimes, a case is so gruesome that trigger warnings must be given before the episode begins. It can be challenging to hear what is described in some of the cases. Never have I not wondered why people do what they do or what makes them tick.
Knowing that people out there want to hurt others is unfathomable. That’s where the True Crime community comes together. To find out the why’s. To bring attention to cases long forgotten. The True Crime community is a community that wants to right the wrongs of the world. A community that wants to bring justice to those who have long thought that they would never see it come. One thing that the best true crime podcasts bring to the table is the natural and raw emotion of the podcasters behind the mic. It’s not scripted the way that people would think it to be.
Another fantastic podcast that people should really listen to is Monsters Who Murder by Robert McKnight and Amanda Howard. Their show is often focused on one case per season so that they can take an intense, in-depth dive into it. The latest season revolved around the school shooter at Majorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. I had personally done my own research on that case, but the way that Amanda and Robert just dove in and analyzed it in a way that I couldn’t was absolutely incredible.
