The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man Coming This November

The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man

The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man is a brand new comic story for the titular superhero, releasing in November. Marvel Comics has made a big push for this story for many particular reasons. After the disappointment of The Amazing Spider-Man, The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man will be written by new Marvel writer, Joe Kelly. Let’s go over this new creative direction for the book, and where it can lead the series.

The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man

The premise of The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man is a very intriguing one. Doctor Strange has a covenant with Cyttorak, a demonic entity that helps him protect the Earth from cosmic threats. Recently in Marvel comics, Doctor Strange has lost the title of “Sorcerer Supreme”, and that title has been given to Victor Von Doom, one of the most infamous comic book villains of all time.

Doctor Doom is a very utilitarian leader, so instead of taking these tasks head-on, he has recruited Spider-Man to help him on this journey. In The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man, Spidey will go up against seemingly supernatural, magical, and even cosmic-level entities. He will die, and get back up many times to fulfill Doom’s covenant to Cyttorak. Joe Kelly is taking over writing duties for this comic as well. Zeb Wells, controversial writer for the series is finally taking his leave after writing for “The Amazing Spider-Man” comic for over two years now.

Zeb Wells’ Spider-Man Comics

Zeb Wells is a comic book writer who took as the main creative force for The Amazing Spider-Man comic in 2022. Marvel started Spidey’s comics over with a brand new first issue and a new status quo for the character. In this series, Peter Parker has alienated everyone he loves and cares about. He is on the ropes with many loved ones like his Aunt May, and even his superhero friends like the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.

Above all, he has broken up with his girlfriend, Mary Jane for seemingly an unexplained reason. It is hinted at for over a year in real time, that the reason they broke up was due to a mistake that Peter made. MJ got taken to another dimension, and in the years she was there, fell in love with someone else. This writing decision to separate Pete from her made Spider-Man a miserable character, driving many fans away from the book.

Can Kelly Win Back the Fans?

This is a much greater conversation to have, but can Kelly and the new creative team of McGuinness and Bagley win fans back? The short and long answer is most likely, no. Any fan knows that the editors of current mainline Spider-Man books have an agenda of making the character miserable and keeping him from growing. Will The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man” improve on this at all?

Tons of fans have agreed that the current mainline Spidey comics are just of poor quality. The fans seem to have more love for Ultimate Spider-Man, a new, alternate-universe interpretation of the character. This is vastly preferred by fans, and The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man seems to be just adding more fuel to this fire. Fans will see it once it releases, but many lifelong Spidey fans don’t have much faith in the potential for this new storyline.
