Terminator Zero: An Exciting Setup for Judgement Day

Terminator Zero In The Flesh. AI

The Terminator film franchise had a strong start with the original James Cameron film. The plot was undoubtedly high stakes, but the action and premise were simple, so it was easy for people to engage with the plot. Now, Netflix’s Terminator Zero anime series is primed to switch things up with a fresh new cast of characters. How does this story tie into the larger mythos and Judgement Day?

One thing that has puzzled Terminator fans for a long time is how time travel works in this setting, as some of it seems like it could have resulted in a time paradox. Luckily for those people, Terminator Zero has seen fit to answer this burning question. Terminator Zero embraces the idea of multiverse theory to explain how time travel works in this particular setting. For the uninitiated, this means that when a character travels back in time, they don’t change the future but instead create a parallel reality where events unfold differently.

This has been used in several different shows as a storytelling medium. The most famous example is the Android Saga in Dragon Ball Z, a way to handwave time travel without grappling with how to explain a time paradox. The important thing is that the explanation isn’t just shoved into place; it is a part of the narrative, with a character in the story present to explain this fact during the story.

Setting Up for Judgement Day

The main setup is a character named Malcolm Lee, who came back in time to try and prevent Judgement Day. As part of this, he builds an AI named Kokoro, who he constructs to have her own free will and feelings instead of a machine programmed to do whatever a human tells it to.

As a result, one of the main plot beats is Malcolm’s attempts to convince Kokoro that humanity is worth preserving and that she should help him stop Skynet and prevent Judgement Day. As of the end of season one, how well this will go for humanity isn’t known. The first season is mainly spent setting up the world and asking many questions about the people and the world.

Final Thoughts

So far, Terminator Zero has an interesting premise and a fascinating setup for a new story in a familiar universe. It plays with the idea of time travel to explain a few inconsistencies with how the concept was used in the earlier films, but the primary focus remains on the characters and how they interact with the world. The introduction of an AI character outside of Skynet is an interesting premise, and the question of whether Kokoro will be what changes the future and averts Judgement Day or the thing that leads to humanity’s downfall follows the characters throughout the story and to its ending.
