Tencent’s Plans Get a Forced Patch, as Sony Draws a Line in the Sandbox

Following Sony’s heated legal challenge, Tencent has temporarily hit the brakes on promoting its upcoming game, Light of Motiram. The Chinese tech giant was forced into a defensive position after Sony alleged that the game is a slavish clone of its Horizon series. With this agreement, all new promotion and public testing for the title is halted until a key court decision arrives. But what exactly did Tencent agree to, and how did this clash begin?

The Legal Raid Boss Tencent Must Face

Initially, Sony filed a lawsuit, claiming Tencent’s subsidiary, Polaris Quest, created a copycat game featuring suspiciously familiar animal-like machines and visuals. However, Tencent fired back at this allegation, arguing that Sony cannot fence off an entire genre of popular culture. As of now, both parties have reached a temporary truce to de-escalate the legal drama.

Consequently, Tencent won’t promote or move up the game’s release before late 2027. Furthermore, this truce centers on a pending motion for a preliminary injunction. If everything goes as Sony hopes it does, the game’s release could officially be blocked before a full trial. Whether this legal maneuvering signals a genuine threat to Tencent’s project will be revealed soon.

The Real Endgame is in Litigation

Due to the updated legal schedule, key responses have been pushed into December and January, with a hearing set for late January 2026. Essentially, the court calendar has become as backlogged as a game launch day patch. Therefore, anyone looking for new trailers or teasers for Light of Motiram shouldn’t expect anything anytime soon. Right now, the main arena is in the courtroom, and not the console.

Tencent’s promotional plans for the foreseeable future are currently on hold, as this legal statement has put the brakes on everything the company had planned. Both corporations are now entrenched in a lengthy battle over intellectual property and creative territory. So, how will the outcome of this legal dispute impact the gaming industry? Obviously, similar genre disputes in the future may be influenced moving forward. Ultimately, a game controller won’t be able to decide this fight, but the judge’s gravel will.
