The Ted Lasso finale closed out season four with Ted stepping down as head coach of Richmond’s women’s team, handing the job to assistant coach Alice Chilton. Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard and serves as a showrunner on the series, told TheWrap the move was built into the show from early on, not a last-minute twist.
“Most of it was planned out in terms of big things. Assistant manager for sure. That was pretty much a Day 1 thing from Jason: ‘We should have an assistant manager character and Ted should give her the job,'” Hunt said, referring to series creator Jason Sudeikis, according to TheWrap.
Ted Lasso Finale
Hunt made clear that Ted’s exit from the head coaching chair isn’t a sign he failed at the job. He described it instead as a deliberate passing of the torch to someone the show has spent time developing.
“I don’t think Ted’s elevation of Alice is based at all on any failings on his part. He just sees her readiness. He sees that she has grown, and because she has put work into growing and she’s been willing to grow, he is ready to find a way to have more time in his life to connect with his son and with himself, really. The timing is right,” Hunt told TheWrap.
That framing ties Ted’s decision to his personal life rather than any on-field struggle. Hunt’s comments stop short of detailing what Ted does next at Richmond after giving up the head coach title, a detail the finale does not spell out.
Other Coaching Moves In The Finale
Ted and Alice weren’t the only coaches on the move in the episode, titled “Being Alive,” which aired Oct. 7, 2026, according to Deadline. Roy Kent takes a head coaching position at Chelsea, while Nate ends up coaching the Polish national football team alongside two other coaches, Deadline reported.
The finale also reveals that Roy and his partner, Keeley, are expecting their first child, per Deadline’s recap. That personal milestone arrives in the same episode as Roy’s new job, though the finale does not specify whether Roy and Keeley remain tied to Richmond in any capacity going forward.
A Theme Song Change That Marks The Shift
The coaching changes arrive alongside a symbolic shift in the show’s opening theme. Hunt told Variety that Sudeikis had wanted the theme song to reflect Richmond’s transition from a men’s team to a women’s team for some time, with a new vocalist to match.
“Jason has talked about for a while, that at some point the theme song should be presenting the change and what the show is now, from the men’s team to the women’s team, and we should have it being sung by a woman’s voice,” Hunt said, according to Variety.
What’s Not Yet Confirmed
Hunt’s remarks focus on the reasoning behind Ted and Alice’s roles and the theme song update. He did not address whether the show will return for a fifth season, nor did he comment on whether any cast members are departing the series beyond the job changes depicted onscreen. Those questions remain open as fans digest the finale.
What’s Next
No official announcement on a season five renewal has been made as of the finale’s Oct. 7, 2026, release. Fans looking for more on the characters’ next steps will need to wait for further statements from the show or its network.
