International superstar Taylor Swift has been in the spotlight non-stop since she announced her world tour: The Eras Tour. Spanning all 11 of her album eras, Swift puts on a 3-hour long concert 2-3 nights per week. She is currently in the European leg of the tour and is set to be in Madrid for the next two nights. With all her popularity and the extreme social media platform that she has, Swifties are urging Taylor Swift to speak up on the crisis in Palestine.
#SwiftiesForPalestine and Speak Now Trend on X
Trending on Twitter/X is #SwiftiesForPalestine and Speak Now. The first is the name of the movement that Swifties created to get the singer’s attention – the second is an homage to Swift’s 3rd studio album title and song “Speak Now.” The song, while a romantic one, centers around the theme of speaking up before it is too late. Swifties are using these trending phrases to catch the attention of the pop star in hopes she will use her platform to speak out against the genocide in Palestine.
This isn’t the first time that Swifties have tried to get the singer to speak up. In December 2023, Swifties managed to get these phrases trending and accounts cropped up that were dedicated to leading fans in their peaceful protest and urging. A petition was created on Change.org on December 3rd, 2023. Taylor Swift did not acknowledge the callout.
Swifties Make Bracelets In Honor of Palestine
Swifties have been trading friendship bracelets at the concerts since the beginning of the tour, thanks to Swift’s lyric “so make the friendship bracelets, take a moment and taste it” from her song You’re On Your Own Kid. Most of these bracelets are themed around Taylor Swift’s different albums and songs, but the #SwiftiesForPalestine movement is urging fans to make
bracelets with the colors of the Palestinian flag or watermelons – the latter of which has been picked up as a symbol to represent Palestine.
Taylor Swift: Speak Now or Speak Not?
Eras Tour dancer Kam Saunders has responded to the trending tags on Twitter by sharing posts about Palestine on his Instagram story. So far, he is the only one of the dancers to do so.
Taylor Swift used to be quite an active advocate for human rights, but in recent years, she has quieted down. A clip from her documentary Miss Americana is circulating on X asking her, “Where did this Taylor go?” – the clip shows Swift talking about how she feels the need to speak up and speak out because she has the platform to do so. In the clip, she says, “I need to be on the right side of history”. However, as of now, Taylor Swift has not responded to the outpour of Swifties urging her to say something about the crisis in Palestine.
