Suicide Squad Isekai Episodes 1-3 Recap: Absurd Concept Comes to Life

The Suicide Squad Isekai dropped its first three episodes in the United States last Thursday, June 27th, only on HBO Max and Hulu. The basic synopsis is unrelated to any of the live-action movies from Suicide Squad, as Wit Studios uses its animation to heighten the comedy and fight scenes for a series in the Isekai genre.

Suicide Squad Isekai anime has a loaded voice cast and notable scores, like its opening instrumental, “Another World,” from legendary composer and guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei. This compares it to its wacky but catchy ending, “Go-Getters,” by renowned Hololive English Myth VTuber Mori Calliope.

This is surprising, as its first season was already announced to have ten episodes with seven to go, as episode four is scheduled to release on July 4th. Based on the DC Comic characters under Warner Brothers, this interesting Isekai headlines a star-studded summer anime season. Spoiler alert!

Suicide Squad Isekai: Episode 1

The first episode of Suicide Squad Isekai starts like the trailers, with a bombastic chase scene involving Harley Quinn and the Joker. The ambiguous start to how A.R.G.U.S. director Amanda Waller got access to this new world is not explained. It does cut to some shots of the transitioning process from real life to this other digital-like landscape with magic and monsters.

Waller transports the Belle Reve criminals and blackmails them to go in, with the reward being a reduced sentence. The urgency is real with the bombs implanted in their necks. The helicopter crashes, and Agent Adam doesn’t make it, letting loose the inmates as they battle the monsters in their own way.

The world-building sets up nicely early on, as this episode is more about introducing the characters at play. The five members of the Suicide Squad are missioned to go into this new world and collect “resources.” The main cast for this anime includes Harley, Deadshot, Clayface, Peacemaker, and King Shark.

Suicide Squad Isekai: Episode 2

The second episode of Suicide Squad Isekai kicks it up a notch, as we see a royal court and Queen Aldora, along with Princess Fone, introduced to knight Cecil. We then find that the Suicide Squad has been captured due to the magic powers the beings in this new world have, similar to another magic anime from Spring airing in Mashle and its upbeat opening.

In the cell, they find an A.R.G.U.S. soldier, Rick Flag. He already knows who the inmates are and reveals that the original “Suicide Squad” went missing. Needing to get a signal to reach Waller, they escape the prison thanks to Clayface after a few comedic tries with some trouble thanks to the magical guards.

His attempts are unsuccessful due to magic handcuffs that restrict his powers, but with the help of the other prisoners in an all-out riot, they all successfully take over the jail in the new world. It is exhilarating to see their powers maximized in situations where they are needed, showing that everyone has their unique flaws and strengths in combat and general life.

Suicide Squad Isekai: Episode 3

For the Suicide Squad Isekai series, the strongest animation was the first episode, but it does show some inconsistencies. It is not bad; the fights are entertaining, and the score within the episodes sets the mood for the wild action to ensue, especially with the ending by Calliope. It was unexpected that Waller was the centerpiece for that dance, as it looked like a Jojo pose.

Episode three begins with Cecil reasoning with Flag and the rest of the squad, going to the castle, and meeting Fione and Aldora. Flag confesses due to a spell and says the last squad left and joined forces as captains with the enemy monsters. Peacemaker convinces Aldora to continue the mission and not be executed.

This is with the caveat that Flag is imprisoned while they join Cecil’s forces to infiltrate an army of werewolves. They are led by Ratcatcher, a prison mate of Deadshot who he does not care for. Even with his magic staff controlling werewolves, he is defeated by the Suicide Squad. Katana, a foe of Harley, saves Ratcatcher, as we are teased with the enemy squad.
