Unstable Starring Rob Lowe Axed by Netflix Amid Cancellation Week

Netflix isn’t done with canceling shows. The streaming giant recently decided not to proceed with a third season of Unstable, filmed in California, especially in the Los Angeles area, a comedy series starring and co-created by Rob Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe. The second season failed to break into the Netflix Top 10 chart. The executives decided to base the renewal decisions on views despite the show having a dedicated fanbase, once again earning the ire of netizens.

Unstable Plot

The first season of Unstable made a name for its sitcom-like humor and Rob’s iconic, comedic performance. Viewers adore the eccentric Ellis Dragon, reminiscent of Lowe’s character in Parks and Recreation, Chris Traeger. Unstable is the story of Ellis Dragon, an admired businessman who thinks differently. The synopsis describes him as a “universally-admired, eccentric, narcissist-adjacent biotech entrepreneur.” Ellis’s mission is to make the world a better place, but his ways are out of the box. His son Jackson, however, disagrees. Can Jackson save his father and his biotech company? Can the two salvage their relationship and will Jackson escape his father’s shadow?

Cast

Unstable is a series about the emotional free-fall man, Ellis Dragon, played by Rob Lowe. West Wing actor and his real-life son, John Owen Lowe, plays the promising Jackson, a growing boy tired of his father’s unconventional ways, especially in working. The cast also features Fleabag actress Sian Clifford as Anna Bennet, Emma Ferreira as Ruby Rosario, and Aaron Branch and Malcolm.

Netflix Cancellation

Deadline reports that Netflix canceled Unstable today, adding to the long list of axed shows this week. Sources state that the producers are quietly shopping the show. However, finding a new home for the Netflix original is tricky. There are several limitations. A linear network may be Unstable’s most realistic option. This observation comes from what happened to the series One Day at A Time, post-cancellation. Sources claim that Rob Lowe may choose the Fox channel as he has close ties with the network. However, this is unlikely as Fox already has its own comedy series.

Fans are Furious

Last week, Netflix revealed that Kaos and That ’90s Show will not return to the screen. They’ve added salt to the wound with Unstable’s cancellation, and it may just hit the streaming giant this time. When it was revealed that the show was canceled due to season 2 failing to break the Top 10, show fans and users took their grievances to X, formerly Twitter. The topic soon became trending, with many expressing their love for the different father-son dynamic reminiscent of classic sitcoms. It did stand out, and many ask, is the Top 10 the only reason shows should be renewed?

Final Thoughts

Original shows, especially comedy series, are struggling to survive on streaming platforms like Netflix. Unstable has surpassed many challenges, as the strikes caused its season two delay, and the showrunners had a problem, which they’ve sorted out. Despite news of successes being renewed, such as the comedy Nobody Wants This and Emily in Paris Season 5, the news of Unstable’s cancellation still became viral. Many hope that the producers succeed in shopping the series. For now, Unstable seasons 1 and 2 are still on the streaming platform’s library, available for binging, and have an open ending.
