In this era of streaming, it seems films don’t leave a mark unless they are huge, lucrative blockbuster successes. However, there are many other films out there that are just as worthy of a watch. Here are four examples of underrated Netflix comedies that deserve a second chance! This list includes a handful of movies that either went under the radar or didn’t get the appreciation they deserved upon their initial release. Or, maybe some were just so good they should be acknowledged again. Read below for more!
Underrated Netflix Comedies: Always Be My Maybe

The first on my list of underrated Netflix comedies, Always Be My Maybe, centers on two childhood sweethearts who have fallen out and ended up losing touch for over fifteen years. When they finally reconnect as adults, will the duo be able to put aside their differences and reacclimate to one another’s lives? The film stars Ali Wong and Randall Park, with Wong playing Sasha Tran, a celebrity chef, and Park playing Marcus Kim, a member of an obscure but talented hip-hop band.
The film is heartwarming and nostalgic, with themes of lost love and reconnecting with someone from the past. It bodes the question, what would you do with a second chance at first love?
Underrated Netflix Comedies: The Half of It
The Half of It follows a shy girl who helps the school jock impress the girl he is crushing on. What she doesn’t tell him? She also likes the same girl. Through it all, much of the story focuses on Paul and Ellie’s friendship. For example, can their relationship prevail despite the challenges they face? How does liking the same girl impact their relationship? When this movie came out in 2020, it seemed to fly under the radar and thus, I’m adding it to my list of underrated Netflix comedies to watch.
In terms of the plot, The Half of It is a very nontraditional story, and I feel like we don’t see dynamics like Ellie and Paul’s very often. The story is less of a love story and is less concerned with who gets the girl; rather, it is more focused on the relationship between friends. What I liked about this movie is that it acknowledged Ellie was more than just her sexuality, and it seemed essential to the filmmakers to make her a well-rounded character. Paul also never shamed or reacted poorly to Ellie’s sexuality when she came out to him; it was simply another part of her. She was still his friend.
Underrated Netflix Comedies: Set It Up
Set It Up follows two assistants who try to set up their bosses to preoccupy them and make it so they themselves can get a much-needed break from work. To do this, the duo orchestrates a “meet cute” between their respective bosses without their knowledge. Despite their meddling, the bosses’ relationship eventually blows up in their faces – How does this affect their blossoming relationship? Their careers? In terms of underrated Netflix comedies, this one is probably less underrated than the others, although it is always worth a rewatch!
Set It Up stars Glen Powell and Zoey Deutch and is quite the friends-to-lovers story! Although the pair initially start off as no more than strangers with a mutually beneficial goal, their relationship progresses as their scheme goes on. What started as friends just trying to help one another out turns into something more, and by the end, they fall in love. But what will happen to them when their bosses find out what they’ve done?
Underrated Netflix Comedies: The Nice Guys
The final movie on my list of underrated Netflix comedies is The Nice Guys. Starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, The Nice Guys follows a private detective and a hired “enforcer” who join forces to help track down a missing woman. The unlikely pairing makes for a good team despite their different approaches to things. Many critics attribute the success of the film to Crowe and Gosling’s chemistry. Even if the plot is dull at times, the duo is quite entertaining!
