“NOT FOR KIDS!” A Sausage Party Recap

Sausage Party is a raunchy and adult comedy film directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan. It follows an anthropomorphic sausage named Frank and a cast of other living foods who believe humans are gods who take groceries out of the supermarket, or as they call it, “The Great Beyond.” After a bottle of honey mustard is purchased and then returned, it tries to warn them that the “Great Beyond” is nothing they’ve dreamed of, but no one listens except Frank. Frank and Brenda go out on a hilarious, high-speed adventure to escape consumption by the humans and the wrath of the antagonist of the film, Douche.

After the foods find out that the humans can be killed, they all come together to drive the humans away from the store forever, defeating Douche in the process. Finally free of fear of being eaten, the food celebrates together with intimacy.

After the success of Sausage Party, the sequel-series was released to Prime Video with its original cast of characters and voice actors, along with a few surprises, in 2024. While originally receiving mixed reviews from critics, some were entertained by the comedy and voice acting, while others were slightly appalled by the political themes and characters. A month after the events of the first film, Frank and his friends have established a safe “Foodtopia”. But after a massive flood destroys their safe haven, they are forced to partner with the humans to ensure their survival.

Inside Sausage Party Foodtopia — Politics, Power Struggles, and a Fight for Survival

Season 1 follows the characters as they face the aftermath of a massive flood that destroyed their store. The series delves into the responsibilities of creating a new functional society, including establishing currency and dealing with political conflicts.

An orange named Julius serves as the antagonist, challenging Frank and Brenda’s leadership with popularity, creating political tension amongst the foods. Frank and Brenda face relationship problems, and the series also explores the dynamics between Barry, Sammy, and other loved and new characters. The series even features election day, where Julius runs against Frank and Brenda, highlighting the political theme of Foodtopia.

Sausage Party Foodtopia Season 2 — Dark Secrets, Revolutions, and the Fight for Survival

While maintaining a comedic tone, Foodtopia takes on a more serious theme, highlighting real-world political conflicts with references and situations.

Season 2 follows Frank, Barry, and Sammy as they are exiled from Foodtopia after facing resentment for Frank’s leadership style. They discover Newfoodland, a seemingly utopian society where food and humans coexist, but soon discover a dark secret about the city’s reliance on consuming food from other areas for energy. The second season explores themes of leadership, societal structures, and the consequences of revolution, as Frank and his companions question their own values and fight to protect Foodtopia, their original home, from Newfoodland’s control.

Foodtopia is a well fitting, comedic sequel to Sausage Party. While not including inter-dimensional themes, but rather societal issues and politics, it’s made its mark as a socially and politically thought-provoking and entertaining series.
