Pride and Prejudice Gets A Netflix Spin-Off Adaptation

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

There are many iconic Pride and Prejudice adaptations. Millennials have the 2005 version, which starred Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFayden. A generation before, the TV series starred Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

Netflix also recently added the 2005 version to its movie library. Recently, there’s been a buzz that Netflix has greenlit a Pride and Prejudice adaptation. Will this one bridge a divided generation that has a preferred version? Here’s everything we know about Netflix’s potential venture.

Pride and Prejudice

Penned by Jane Austen in the 19th century, Pride and Prejudice is a classic story of love and class. A stubborn woman named Elizabeth Bennet meets the prideful Fitzwilliam Darcy, who eventually falls in love. However, the two must face various obstacles to love and their social statuses.

Though Austen hasn’t specified the era the novel takes place, she wrote the book in 1796-1797 and published it in 1813. Hence, the book reflects the customs and traditions of the 1790s until 1810. The main themes of Pride and Prejudice are family, reputation, social standing, pride, and prejudice. Pride is a constant presence in the character’s attitudes and treatment of each other.

A Classic Literature

In the story, pride closes their eyes to a certain extent, coloring their judgments and causing them to make rash decisions. Price blinds the protagonists, Elizabeth and Darcy, from their true feelings. Society, power dynamics, and love, Pride and Prejudice remains classic literature that transcends time.

Mysterious, romantic, and all the like, it has had many adaptations, including a TV series adaptation. The latter is fondly remembered as Colin Firth’s Darcy jumps into the lake (but it’s a stunt double, and his jump was done in a tank). So how will Netflix’s adaptation stand out if it greenlights the series?

The Adaptation’s Gossip

According to Deadline, there is a possible Netflix series adaptation of the Austen classic. Several outlets have since reported that Netflix is developing a big-budget TV series adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, which will join another successful Regency Era work, Bridgerton. The Daily Mail reported that Daisy Edgar-Jones had turned down the chance to play the fictitious Elizabeth Bennet. Currently, Netflix has refused to comment on whether a Pride and Prejudice series is in the works.

A Famous Author Involved

The famous author Dolly Alderton will reportedly work on the series. Sources claim that Alderton has sent the scripts, but her reps insist she hasn’t said yes to the project. Author Dolly Alderton is famous for her global bestselling 2018 memoir, “Everything I Know About Love,” wherein she reminisces on her experience navigating life in her 20s. This book became a social bible for many women in that age frame and has been adapted into a seven-episode series for BBC One and Peacock in 2022.

Final Thoughts

2024 is a big year for Jane Austen’s works. On Wednesday, BBC announced that there’ll be a Pride and Prejudice spinoff series starring Elizabeth Bennet’s sister, Mary. The series, “The Other Bennet Sister,” will be helmed by Doctor Who’s producer Bad Wolf. If Netflix does attempt to remake the classic, many comments hope they don’t push the repeated plot of a modern-day girl time traveling to the 19th century. The streaming giant remains mum, and Alderton’s representatives have not responded to various requests for comment.
