One Piece Huge Sequel Set for 2025 with Netflix, Filming Planned in June with new Exec Team

The hit Netflix live-action from last summer is set to premiere in 2025, with filming for its sequel set to take place around June of this year.

The One Piece series is also adding co-executive producer Joe Tracz as the co-showrunner and writer for the upcoming season. Tracz was the co-executive producer for the recent adaptation of Disney+ Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

This was probably my favorite anime to live action I have seen on Netflix, and even though I have never seen the anime or read the manga, it got me intrigued enough to watch the whole season. I am now sort of a fan of One Piece and am excited for what comes next with their future installment.

According to Deadline, Tracz joins a stacked cast and crew behind the first season of the One Piece live-action on Netflix. He was the writer-producer for Netflix’s adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events in 2017 which ran for three seasons.

“I’ve been lucky to work on big adaptations of several beloved series, and they don’t come bigger or more beloved than One Piece,” Tracz said of his new role.

This comes right after the Percy Jackson and the Olympians adaptation hit Disney+ last year in December. It had mixed reviews and compared to the past films, it is way more faithful to author Rick Riordan’s books. Despite some changes, with a few for the better, and the help of the author himself, the eight-episode series for the beloved Percy Jackson franchise is getting another season as well.

It is great to see that Tracz is a fan of Eiichiro Oda, the original creator of the One Piece manga, which began in 1997 and is still ongoing today.

“I’m a huge fan of [original creator Eiichiro Oda’s] incredible imagination and I was blown away by what the live-action team created in Season 1. So it’s a dream and a joy to come aboard the Going Merry as it enters the Grand Line for an even more giant Season 2.”

Executive producer Matt Owens commented on the addition of Tracz, stating this about Netflix’s new hire:

“Joe has brought a wealth of enthusiasm and experience into our second season that will help take One Piece to new heights. We’re incredibly lucky to have him as a co-captain of this ship. The best crew on the seas grows larger.”

Season one debuted in August 2023 as an eight-episode series and was renewed for a second season due to its massive success in a short period. CEO of production company Tomorrow Studios Marty Adelstein stated the next season can be ready 18 months after November’s actor’s strike ended in 2023.

One Piece: Live Action Sequel Set for 2025 Premiere

The executive producer for last season, Matt Owens, will work with Tracz instead of Steven Maeda, who will step down as co-showrunner. Maeda worked with Owens for Season 1 and although he is stepping down, he still is the executive producer for the popular Netflix series.

The second season of One Piece will cover the next manga arc with the main character Luffy and the Straw Hat crew entering the Alabasta arc after the events of the first season, according to IGN. With a few new characters introduced for the sequel season, some are more than speculation at this point.

According to IGN, Jamie Lee Curtis will be in the new series, with Danny DeVito being a popular choice to enter the One Piece universe. However, the character Chopper is still up for debate on who will be cast as the human reindeer hybrid.

The main cast for season one will be back, with Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji.

The main plot for One Piece follows the main protagonist Luffy and his journey to become the next Pirate King, exploring an expansive tropical world and searching for the ultimate treasure: the “One Piece.”

One Piece: Season 2 Plans to Film for Netflix in June

The original casting for the main bunch of characters we follow was one of the reasons why I think this Netflix series works so well. This adaptation gets it right it seems with the personalities and the actors playing them.

One Piece won the WGA Award in the Children’s Episodic, Long Form & Specials category for 2023 with its pilot episode. This action-adventure was in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for about eight weeks and debuted as number one in 46 countries at that time while staying in the top 10 in 93 other countries.

On Rotten Tomatoes, it had a 95% Audience Score, one of the highest for a Netflix show with 85% on the Tomatometer by critics.

Netflix has a bunch of new shows and series coming out like the final season of You season five coming late in 2024. A few other recommendations, including anime, on Netflix include the following with this Spring anime season going on currently. Classics like Pokemon Season One are still available to watch in terms of cartoons.

New K-dramas like Goodbye Earth or sci-fi movies like director Zach Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver were recently released on Netflix to add to their variety catalog of shows and films.
