Once upon a time, in 2019, director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia premiered one of the most disturbing films to date, The Platform. The film became the most-watched original film on the streaming platform Netflix. As a second film is about to premiere, many want to refresh their memory of the best Spanish dystopian thriller to ever show humanity at its lowest.
The Platform Plot
The Spanish dystopian thriller follows the story of people imprisoned in a “Vertical Self-Management Center.” This tower, in which a platform provides food to people on each floor once a day, starting at the top, created conflict and desperation among its inmates. Inmate Goreng, played by Iván Massagué, voluntarily admits himself in exchange for a college degree. However, he becomes the needed change as he starts a revolution.
Digital Trends narrates The Platform as a modern-day classic not only due to its unique cast but also for its bizarre, spine-chilling production. All of this led to lasting, stellar impressions. The credit must go to the cast who brought this masterpiece to life and its director. Goreng, Imoguiri (Antonia San Juan), and Baharat (Emilio Buale) were the hopeful but tragic protagonists struggling to change the prison as it chisels away at their humanity. And let’s not forget actor Zorion Eguileor, who played Trimagasi, the witty, sarcastic devil on Goreng’s shoulder who succeeded in making himself stand out despite his short appearance in the film, being both loved and hated for his role.
A Darker Side of Humanity
The Platform serves as a scathing portrait of society. The divisions of class are presented in a dark, satirical manner. The tower, the titular Platform, acts as a clever symbol of social hierarchy, exploring how each person uses the resources given to them and how such action affects others. Inmates on higher levels hog all the food and leave little to no scraps, representing the upper class, who indulge themselves with no regard for the people in the lower class desperately needing help. The movie raises uncomfortable questions on human morality as the audience watches the characters in the tower become desperate people who would do anything to survive in such harsh circumstances.
As inmates cause each other pain, others are driven to suicide, and others save themselves rather than support others; this behavior only drives each other’s vices, resorting to killing and eating fellow inmates to survive the tower’s lower levels. The Platform is disturbingly interesting and a haunting and pessimistic picture of society. What does it take for change to occur and for humanity to unite? The upcoming sequel might answer this question.
Final Thoughts
The Platform is remembered for its harsh, bizarre world. It is a movie that truly captured and unveiled humanity’s mystery and darkness. It is a necessary sci-fi thriller that merges social satire with Biblical allegory. Goreng tried to help his fellow inmates and sent a message to those who rule what seems to be hell on Earth. It set a precedent for future dystopian films. The Platforms is an epic battle deserving of a sequel. Watch as the battle against a corrupt system continues. The Platform 2, a highly deserved sequel, is set to premiere on Netflix this coming October 4, 2024. Are you ready to relive the nightmarish reality that is the tower?
