While the mashup of Kana Hanazawa and Mori Calliope in a song is notable, it’s on track with Calliope’s involvement with anime and voice actresses.
Earlier this month, it was announced she would be part of the upcoming anime ‘Suicide Squad Isekai’ with their ending song. Releasing a single with a big-name voice actress like Hanazawa is a big accomplishment and just another big step towards a bigger goal in the Vtuber music scene with its involvement in anime.
The famous Japanese actress is known for her work in the latest Demon Slayer series as Mitsuri Kanroji and the Steins; Gate anime as Mayuri Shiina. In 2015, Hanazawa won the Seiyu Award for Best Supporting Actress as Kosaki Onodera in Nisekoi and has been a staple in the anime community since 2012. Hololive English’s Mori Calliope of the first generation debuted as a Vtuber in 2020 and has been a trendsetter ever since.

Kana Hanazawa, a well-adored voice actress, is teaming up with Vtuber and music artist Mori Callope on the new song, “Tokyo Friday Night,” with Joint Beauty producing under the label Trigger Records. This was released with a music video last week on June 14th, as it comes in at the perfect time with anime like Demon Slayer ongoing.
Hanazawa also has her music on YouTube and performs live as a multi-talented singer under the Aniplex/Sony Music Entertainment Japan label. Mori Calliope is under EMI Records Japan and UMG Universal Music, and while she has a large catalog of diverse music, she mostly streams on YouTube.
As a Vtuber, she streams games and has virtual concerts, karaoke sessions, and watch-alongs, like most streamers. Calliope’s collaborations with her fellow gen-mates under Cover Corporation, the first wave of the English branch, Hololive Myth.
Hololive English’s Mori Calliope Pillar in Vtuber Music Scene
This is Mori Calliope’s latest single, with an upcoming second major album, PHANTOMIME, dropping on August 16th. Hololive English’s very well-known Grim Reaper has been a stalwart in the Vtuber music industry as one of the first pioneers to blow up on the scene with her rapping style in English and Japanese.
Over the years, Calliope has experimented with different music genres, with her first album, UnAlive, differing from her first major album, Sinderella, both from 2022.
Two weeks ago, Calliope dropped a single called “Midnight Mayoi” with Hololive Indonesia’s Kobo Kanaeru. It has a similar tone to “Tokyo Friday Night.” It seems she has been tapping into more of a melodic side with her music, despite releasing another single before this one, “Tide,” with Japanese artist Ai Carina Uemura, which is the total opposite of both singles.
Joint Beauty Track Features Calliope And Hanazawa
The new single will be on Joint’s Beauty’s EP “YOLO Vol. 1,” along with three other songs, including their hit from 2023, “Special Days” by Fujii Takashi and Peanuts-kun. The music video, featuring both Mori Calliope and Kana Hanazawa in the artwork, was directed by Abeshiori with students from the Animation Design Seminar at Nagoya Zokei University.
The lyrics were co-written by Yojo Seijiro and Calliope herself, infusing English and Japanese lyrics within mostly the pre-chorus rapping portions (according to Genius). While it has a slow, lo-fi vibe based on the artwork and animation, it has a calmer yet pulsing upbeat that reflects the vocals bouncing in the song. It has a nightclub-like vibe with soothing J-pop elements.
