The Live-Action Gundam movie won’t be axed anytime soon. This relieving news comes after the troublesome reviews on Netflix’s Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance. With the confirmation of a new director comes the news on which streaming site is housing it, as it’s been confirmed that the live-action is pivoting from the streaming giant. Here’s everything we know about the future of the Gundam live-action movie.
Gundam: Requiem For Vengeance
Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance takes viewers to the European front during the One Year War, a conflict first depicted in the original Mobile Suit Gumdan series. The series follows the story of pilots operating humanoid weapons called the mobile suits, Gundam. Set in Universal Century 0079, the story begins when the Principality of Zeon declares its independence from the Earth Federation Government.
This action ignited the war, but Zeon gained the upper hand with a powerful new weapon: the mobile suit. However, they could not fully conquer Earth, and this fight led to a prolonged stalemate. Months into the war, Federation Forces captured a base in Zeon-occupied Eastern Europe. A Zeon composite battalion was dispatched to reclaim the base. Which side will win?
Changing Director and Direction
Netflix has solidified itself as the streaming platform for Gundam’s anime productions. However, its live-action movie will now be leaving the service. According to Deadline, Netflix handled the film’s distribution under director Jordan Vogt Roberts. Yet, Requiem for Vengeance failed to capture an audience.
While it had good CGI animation, many fans found the plot lacking and missing the spirit of Gundam. Hence, the Gundam animation studio, Sunrise decided to change leadership and streaming platforms. As reported, Jim Mickle, who’s famous for his directing work Stake Land is chosen for Gundam Live-Action. He’s an interesting and good choice, considering his works are well-crafted.
No one is implying that Roberts was a bad choice for he cared about Gundam. However, he caused collateral damage when Requiem For Vengeance failed. Mickle will also produce the new live-action movie with his partner, Linda Moran. They previously worked together on the post-apocalypse drama, Sweet Tooth. Noted for its parallels and how it shaped its younger protagonists, this skill is a core staple in retelling the story of the Gundam Saga. With this new directorship comes the news that Sunrise and Legendary Pictures are moving away from Netflix.
Final Thoughts
With millions of dedicated fans, the live-action film is highly anticipated since it’s the second film in the Gundam franchise. The first live-action film, G-Saviour, in 1999, was well-received and spawned the PlayStation 2-era game. Fans took the news more positively and are relieved the production will continue.
With Mickle entrusted by Sunrise for his successful directing career, Gundam Live-Action is in good hands. Due to current circumstances with Netflix, the film’s release will be delayed. At this time, there is no known information about where will it stream.
