Donald Duck made his first debut in 1934 on The Wise Little Hen. The character was intended to appear only once but unexpectedly became very popular. The waterfowl began appearing in future animated shorts and comic stories. Donald achieved celebrity status like Shirley Temple and Greta Garbo within a few years. A 1939 short, The Autograph Hound, showed Hollywood A-listers wanting his autograph. Walt Disney compared the duck’s popularity to Clark Gable in 1940.
Donald’s status led to him starring in U.S. government domestic propaganda during World War II. He starred in cartoons inspiring American citizens to rally behind the soldiers. Many of the shorts revolved around different plots and encouraged people to invest in bonds. One even focused on ridiculing Adolf Hitler, winning Donald his first Oscar in 1943. From then on, he maintained his popularity and evolved with the times.
YouTube’s Super Spicy Challenge Show
Donald Duck’s newest experience was taking on the challenge of Hot Ones. Produced by First We Feast, the YouTube talk show’s premise is simple yet unique. The host, Sean Evans, questions the celebrity guests as they eat spicy wings. The wings are substituted with a vegetarian option if the guest requests it. Either way, they eat ten wings, and each wing is hotter than the last.
With nearly 300 episodes and millions of views, Hot Ones has hosted numerous celebrities. The show’s early days featured mostly rappers, comedians, and athletes, but things have changed. Actors like Jenna Ortega, Bryan Cranston, and Viola Davis have been in the hot seat. The guest roster includes world-famous chef Gordon Ramsey and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. In 2022, the show featured its first animated guest, Puss in Boots. This appearance opened the door for the iconic Donald Duck to make his big arrival.
Parting Thoughts
The iconic waterfowl had a hot time during his appearance on Hot Ones. Accompanied by Mickey Mouse, Donald partook in spicy cauliflower wings during his interview. Five hot sauces were used in the episode, mostly named after famous Disney villains. Unfortunately, Donald could not take the spice and lost his cool in his well-known fashion. However, there are a few months left to celebrate his 90th birthday. One can imagine what craziness Donald Duck will get into next.
