Hollywood heavyweight Cate Blanchett has teamed up with accomplished filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron on the upcoming series Disclaimer. The series follows Blanchett as the renowned journalist Catherine Ravenscroft who has received praise for uncovering large corporations’ dirty secrets.
The tables begin turning on her when she obtains a novel with no author in the mail detailing many of her past transgressions. The cast of Disclaimer boasts a strong list of A-list talent as Leslie Manville, Kevin Kline, Kodi-Smit McPhee, and Sasha Baron Cohen also star in the anticipated psychological thriller.
Cate Blanchett’s New Apple TV+ Thriller’s Behind the Scenes
Five-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron first came across Renée Knight’s novel of the same name approximately 10 years ago. Children of Men writer-director Cuaron initially considered making Disclaimer a feature adaptation of Knight’s book but felt flummoxed on how to convey all its juicy elements in a standard film runtime. So, he’s admitted to shelving it while turning his attention to other projects and productions he was working on at the time.
Cuaron went on to work on Roma, a semi-autobiographical tale he wrote and directed that centered around a live-in nanny named Cleo Gutierrez in 1970s Mexico City. As he received near-universal acclaim and accolades including a Best International Film Oscar, he also worked on a short-lived NBC series entitled Believe about a young girl gifted with remarkable abilities after experiencing a family tragedy. Eventually, he returned to Disclaimer with fresh eyes and was intent on making another series.
Cate and Cuaron on Disclaimer’s Unique Narrative
Cuaron took on the Herculean task of writing and directing all 7 episodes of Disclaimer. While the total hours of production took longer than expected due to his primary background in movies, he still assembled a stellar cast of actors and crew members to make it come to life. The series is not told in the standard three-act structure that many shows and films typically follow, which proved to be a welcome challenge for Cate Blanchett.
In an interview with The Wrap, Cuaron and Cate talk about how formulaic storytelling often paints the main character in a sympathetic light to draw in the audience. Cuaron opted to reveal more about Ravenscroft when it added to the overall story. Cate Blanchett, who also is an executive producer on the Apple TV+ production, employed the same strategy in her acting process.
The two-time Oscar-winning actress shared “I had to play a tall glass of water. The tricky thing was to withhold information from the audience about who the person was… to play someone who had a wealth of hidden experiences buried deep within her.”
Disclaimer’s Cast of Characters
The primarily comedic Borat actor and acclaimed satirist Sasha Baron Cohen joins the cast as Catherine Ravenscroft’s present-day husband Robert. A younger Robert and Catherine are part of the limited series as well, played respectively by Adam El Hagar and Leila George. Kevin Kline and Leslie Manville also play husband and wife as Stephen Brigstock and Nancy Brigstock. Let Me In and X-Men: Dark Phoenix star Kodi-Smit McPhee plays Robert and Catherine’s son Nicholas.

Disclaimer sounds promising given the list of talented names attached. Alfonso Cuaron is an immensely gifted storyteller and has the credentials to make any story he wishes to put on screen.
