As part of Geeked Week, Netflix revealed the lead cast of the upcoming season of its Emmy-winning satirical dark anthology, Black Mirror, which is nearing its release. Creator Charlie Brooker spills some of the hottest tea and leaves clues just enough for people to check their insatiable appetite for the most amazing sci-fi anthology to date.
Black Mirror Back to Basics
Among the amped-up audiences of Geeked Week, Brooker teased that we can expect a mix of genres and styles. For season 7, we’ll have six episodes, two of which are feature-length. Some of these episodes would be deeply unpleasant; some are quite funny, while some are emotional. Backstage, Brooker told Tudum that the new season will bring a little bit of the original Black Mirror. It’s back to the basics; they’re all sci-fi stories, but something horrifying will occur.
However, it’s not overtly horror-movie-esque, but there’ll be disturbing content, hinting this might be their most disturbing season to date. Brooker and the Black Mirror creative team aren’t giving any specific spoilers, but they did tease a major info nugget: one of the episodes will be the sequel of the now-classic Season 4 opener, “USS Callister.”
USS Callister Sequel
Brooker said on stage that the show’s fans would recognize the cast of a certain spaceship from one of their episodes reappearing, and they’re right. Normally, Brooker kills off all the characters at the end of an episode, but this time, he’s kept some of them alive. The sequel will follow the remaining crew of USS Callister following the death of Robert Daly. The storyline opens new possibilities and challenges and marks the first time the series produced a direct sequel.
To refresh your memory, the highly acclaimed Season 4 episode centered on a brilliant but troubled programmer, Robert Daly, who co-created a popular online video game. Unhappy with his gaming company’s perceived lack of recognition, Robert creates a simulated reality within the game, giving himself a Captain Kirk-like role aboard a starship and leading an adoring crew based on his real-life co-workers. Together, they go through sci-fi adventures. But remember, this is Black Mirror; something unexpected and sinister always happens.
Star-Studded Cast

Aside from the USS Callister sequel, Netflix finally revealed the extensiveness of how star-studded this upcoming Black Mirror season would be. Brooker himself stated they’ve got an embarrassingly stacked cast! Via a cryptic “data drop” asset, Netflix revealed Peter Capaldi, Emma Corrin, Rashida Jones, Billy Magnussen, Jimmi Simpson, Awkwafina, Issa Rae, Cristin Milioti, Paul Giamatti and Harriet Walter would star in the series. Milioti, Simpson, and Raymond will likely reprise their roles in the sequel of USS Callister.
Final Thoughts
Other episode plots have yet to be disclosed. However, the anthology format will remain. Each episode will be a standalone story, except for the sequel, per the Tudum report. Familiar faces such as Michaela Coel are not expected to return for this season, which surprised many. No official release date has been announced, but Black Mirror season 7 is expected to drop in 2025. Speculation points to a possible autumn release.
People expect a delay, as the gap between season 5 and 6 stretched to four years, partly caused by the pandemic and the departure of Brooker and his partner Annabel Jones from their production company. However, Brooker, with Jones and Jessica Rhoades, are returning as executive producers, so you can bet that the Black Mirror tone and style will remain intact with this upcoming season.
