After a nearly three-year hiatus, the popular horror series Squid Game returns to Netflix later this year. Alongside a second season, the streaming network announced that a third season will also be developed and set for release on the platform. Ultimately, Squid Game follows impoverished people who compete in deadly-designed children’s games for a cash prize. Coming from South Korea, the series would debut in September 2011 and reach Netflix’s number one spot in 70 countries. Likewise, its buzz had completely taken over social media algorithms with its creative memes and plausible game theories.

The Sudden Rise of Squid Game

Despite popping up out of nowhere, the popularity of Squid Game isn’t as surprising as it was originally. Not only would Squid Game become the first Korean Drama series to top Netflix’s most-watched television shows, but also the most-watched television series upon its release.

Regarding its popularity, Squid Game’s unique concept of deadly competitions surrounding popular children’s games caught attention. Two big factors behind the TV series’ popularity among fans vary. While some cared for its thought-provoking commentary on poverty and capitalism, others mostly enjoyed its violence and suspense.

So far, the children’s games that will be featured and turned into sadistic death traps this season are unclear. However, the plot has given details of what to expect. Three years after the last Squid game, the second season follows Player 456, Seong Gi-hun, who seeks to end the game for good by finding the people responsible for its rise. Using the fortune he won from the previous game, Gi-hun will begin his search by looking for a man in a suit in a subway. From there, he’ll realize that he’ll have to play the game again in hopes of destroying the organization behind it.

Release Schedule of Second Season

Hwang Dong-Hyuk, the series’ director, executive producer, and writer, promised fans Squid Game’s second season would be another epic thrill ride. Along with this letter, more updates surrounding the TV series were provided to excite fans. On Thursday, December 26, Netflix releases season two of Squid Game, however, its release plans aren’t officially laid out. Recently, Netflix has shown a pattern of releasing seasons in parts such as Will Bridgerton, Emily in Paris, and even Cobra Kai.

Whether Squid Game will follow in splitting their season release into parts is not yet known. In addition to its unknown release plans, Netflix hasn’t stated the new season’s episode count either. For reference, Squid Game’s first season was only nine episodes long, 45 minutes to an hour each.

Release Date Video and Third Season Update

Although Netflix didn’t release an official trailer, they did drop a date announcement video instead. The announcement video was released on July 31st and immediately caught the attention of fans worldwide. In the near-minute video, viewers catch glimpses of the carnage they’d witness in the upcoming season. For instance, the video shows players in their iconic green and red jumpsuits running on a track with bodies dropping from unseen gunshots.

What’s more? Netflix would announce plans for Squid Game’s third season. Moreover, the third season drops sometime in 2025 and will be the final season. While the third season will continue to follow Gi-hun’s revenge, the infamous Front Man may find himself in the game and be a worthy opponent against Gi-Hun and other players – that is, if Dong-Hyuk’s words are any indication.
